• Blue light emitted from a smartphone is a type of light that the brain interprets as daylight.

• The blue light actually suppresses melatonin• The result:

• your brain feels stimulated. • your brain is going to get confused and think that the

sun is out—making it even tougher to fall asleep.

RECOMMENDATIONSDon’t have smartphone in bedroom at nightHave “tech free hour” before going to bedBuy an alarm clock

SQA Changes

• 6th year of National Qualifications in S4

• Courses are well embedded across the curriculum- Inwards/Outwards/Forwards

• SQA changes have been made along the way- All looking to support our young people

• Changes to final exams- subject specific slides

Subject Specific Examples- Website

• Design & Manufacture – 2 units, 1 assignment, 1 exam.• Approximately 40% of the course award is based on performance in a final exam; 30% on a design task; and

30% on a practical activity based on the design. Both the design and practical tasks are completed in class time

• Revision materials and resources will be issued in class and will also be accessible on Office 365. Class notes are encouraged to be used as a regular revision aid throughout the year.

• Students are encouraged to practice sketching, rendering, and idea generation techniques to build skills for the final assignment. This can be done at any time with just pencil and paper.

• The department is open for revision or questions all through the year. “

• Students studying National 5 will be assessed regularly but will be working towards a whole course award rather than unit assessments. All N4 students will be working on unit assessments throughout the session. Any N5 student on the borderline of N4 will have backup material collated but may still have to complete some additional work during exam leave in May to ensure all the requirements for N4 are met.”

Assessments throughout the year

• Assessment calendar of key dates is being compiled- alleviate pressure points/hot spots

• Formal Assessment Period replacing Prelims- Mon 3rd Dec x 2 weeks• Student Feedback in focus groups

• Very positive in other schools

• Allowing more time for goal setting and targeted improvement

• Promotes student HWB over the Christmas break

• Part of a series of ongoing formative assessment

• Carried out formally- invigilators, in hall, will replicate the experience but perhaps not the full length of the exam

Promoting Positive Wellbeing

• Don’t under estimate their Health & Wellbeing

• Get the balance• Pupil Support Team• Access to a number of supports that can

support your child • Mental Health & Wellbeing Day• Big push

“You got any homework?...No”

• Don't always listen to 'everything is fine'!

• 10hrs per week of study is minimum (Live n Learn)

• Home Study: Review, Homework, Revision for Exams (meaningful)

• Tracking Reports- Look at these carefully

• Attainment Notices:• Communication to keep you informed, offers advice on next steps & re-sits

Research has shown (and continues to show) that a growth mindset can have a profound effect on students' motivation, enabling them to focus on learning, persist more, learn more, and do better in school. Significantly, when students are taught a growth mindset, they begin to show

more of these qualities. Dr Carol S Dweck

Parent/Carer Role• Setting up the right environment-

Gaming? Social Media? Music?

• Supporting the balance- HWB

• Working closely with the school, accessing support

• Aspirational

• Listening to your son/daughter

• Being interested

• Having Discussions
