Title: Rock Classification and Igneous

Page: 4

Before we look at rocks, let’s review the characteristics of minerals.

Characteristics Naturally occurringDefinite crystalline structureDefinite chemical compositionSolidInorganic*Used for building materials, gemstones, health supplements, toothpaste, medical, baby powder, etc.

What do you know about rocks?

Do you agree with these statements?

Rocks are hard.Rocks are solid.Rocks are natural.Rocks are made of minerals.

Rocks are hard.

Not always…Some rocks are soft and can be

scratched with your fingernail (shale, gypsum)

Other rocks are soft until they are exposed to air, or visa versa.

Rocks are solid.

Not always…Some rocks

contain water in pores.

Geodes hold water and minerals inside.

Some igneous rocks are threaded or have fine meshwork, like Pele’s hair.

Rocks are natural.

Not always…Consider everything that humans

make.

Rocks are made of minerals. Not always…Remember that minerals are

made of inorganic material. What about coal? What about

coquina?What about obsidian?

So what are rocks

then???

I. What is a Rock?• Rocks are naturally occurring solid material made from one or more minerals.•Rocks are classified based on the way they were formed.•Three types of Rocks:

• Igneous – form when hot, liquid rock, or magma, cools and solidifies

• Sedimentary – formed by particles that have been carried or deposited and then compacted and cemented together.

• Metamorphic – rocks formed from chemical reactions one rock forms into another kind over long periods of time.

Igneous RocksIgneous rocks are classified

according to their composition and texture.

4 basic types of textures◦Glassy – black and sharp◦Fine grained – interlocking pieces◦Coarse grained – consist of

interlocking mineral crystals◦Porphyritic – made of large crystals

scattered on the back of small crystals.

Igneous Rock Formations

1.Extrusive – rock formed from lava2.Intrusive – rock formed when magma

forces its way upward into preexisting rocks then hardens

Magma – molten material below the earth’s surface.Lava – molten material above the earth’s surface.
