silver) is the most
common tequila. It is
not aged, so it offers a
more unadulterated
flavor from the agave
plant. Blanco or silver
tequilas are typically
clear in color.
reposadoReposado means rest-
ful, or in this case,
rested. Unlike the
blanco, reposado tequi-
las have been aged in
oak barrels for at
least two months and up
to a full year. This
allows the flavor to
mellow, taking on hints
of oak and a soft
golden color.
añejoAñejo tequilas are aged
in white oak casks for a
year or longer. They
are prized for their
layers of flavor and
drinkability and
perfect for sipping.
extra añejoAny tequila aged for
over three years is
called an Extra Anejo.
Extended aging creates
a darker, mahogany-like
color, and is so rich
that it becomes dificult
to distinguish from
other quality aged
spirits. Extremely
smooth and complex.
All Tequilas are Mezcals; not all Mezcals are
Tequila. Tequila is produced in only 5 specific
regions of Mexico and only using the Blue Agave
plant. Mezcal, however, can be produced in 9 sepa-
rate regions of Mexico and can be made from over
30 varieties of agave plant.
mezcalMezcal literally means oven-cooked agave. Plants
are roasted in the ground under stone and dirt,
then fermented agave juice is distilled in
wood-burning clay pots or copper still, giving
mezcal it’s distinct smokey flavor.
