Registration of Professional Engineering Technologists

at ECSA – Interviews

Introduction

Today we are discussing the various interviews

you can expect to encounter in your application.

The three possible interviews are:

• Experiential Interview

• Professional Review

• Advisory Interview

Assessment of Application

Before the interview, your application has been

assessed by four independent assessors.

Based on the assessment of the assessors the

moderator will make a recommendation for the

applicant to attend either an Experiential Interview

or Professional Review.

The Experiential Interview

The purpose of the Experiential Interview is to determine the

applicant’s competency in the outcomes where this was not

clearly stated in the Engineering Report.

Rule: The applicant will be asked to give clarity for the outcomes

as indicated in the correspondence received from ECSA.

Only in very rare cases will the applicant be asked to give clarity

on other outcomes if the interviewers suspect the applicant did

not write his/her own report.

Professional Review

The applicant can be invited to attend a Professional Review after

attending an Experiential Interview or if the moderator recommends

a Professional Review without Experiential Interview.

The purpose of the Professional Review is to determine if the

applicant is conducting him/her self at the level of a Technologists in

their respective field of competency.

Rule: The applicant will be questioned on all outcomes to determine

how the level of competency is met.

Advisory Interview

The applicant requests an advisory interview upon

being deferred from being registered at ECSA as a

Professional in their field of expertise.

The purpose is for the applicant to seek clarity on

certain outcomes.

Rule: The applicant receives correspondence from

ECSA stating which outcomes were not met.

Preparation for various Interviews

Each type of interview has it’s own preparation standards.

Experiential Interview: the applicant only prepares for the

outcomes as stated in the correspondence received from ECSA.

The interviewers will very rarely ask about other outcomes.

Professional Review:

The applicant is asked on all the eleven outcomes

The applicant prepares a 15 minute presentation of his/her work

based on his/her Engineering Report.
