SAFNET is a regional network that fosters collaborative efforts in fire monitoring and management in southern Africa

GOAL: To achieve more effective fire management

policies and practices in southern Africa through the

use of remote sensing and other geospatial

technology.

PURPOSE: To enhance the use of information from

field observations and remote sensing of fires for

natural resource management in southern Africa.

In 2007-2011 agricultural production in all countries except Georgia was

growing. However, no country has yet reached a volume of agricultural

production of 1990.

Agricultural future of the countries is both of regional and global importance

Meeting in Tromsø, Norway planned for Sept 2014

Meeting title: “Theory and applications of high-resolution satellite imagery in northern lands” • To encompass academic research and gov’t monitoring/planning in

forestry, agriculture, development and environment. • Region is BARIN region. • The meeting will be held at the Fram Center in Tromsø

(http://www.framsenteret.no/english.150370.no.html). • The meeting will be:

– a forum for researchers to present relevant work – presentations about ongoing land monitoring involving high-res imagery

in these countries – demonstrations/training about how to utilize high-resolution satellite

imagery for those with little experience (focused on personnel in relevant ministries and local governments)

– discussions about national needs and uses for such data.

The Network

• Gregory Taff will continue to build the BARIN network through one or more networking trips to the Baltics in 2013 and 2014.
