THS Hosts 41st A nnual " Tim Driscol l " St. Jude Telethon

Senior Alexis Heacox (pictured with THS teacher Patricia Porch), co-president of the THS St. Jude Telethon Club, spoke proudly of her peers at this year 's St. Jude Telethon event . Heacox reported that, through a series of fundraising efforts, THS students and staff donated over $1030 to the telethon, organized by the family of the late Tim Driscoll.

In addition to the club's fundraising efforts, THS students got involved in the entertainment of the day. The cheerleaders, jazz band, student theatre, and Forbes Flyers were among the many performers at this 13 hour event.

In total, the even raised over $67,000; Driscoll's daughter Kristin Raymond reported that the amount goes up every year and indicated that the live-streaming the event has helped with that. Much of the building is used for elements of the telethon, which includes door prizes and food sales. Attendance every year is free.

ACADEMIC HELP FOR ALL STUDENTSThe LITERACY LAB is now open and available to all students for any academic purpose! Please go to Mrs. Morton?s room, B Building 2425, on Mondays and Fridays during all lunch waves of Period 5 or on Thursdays during all lunch waves of Period 4. Students coming from a study hall should check in with that teacher first so attendance can be taken.

A wide range of academic help is offered, including but not limited to: reinforcement in a specific language arts skill, another set of eyes to reread an essay, help catching up from an absence, assistance organizing materials, or strategies to manage time more effectively.

Tech Ed teacher Greta Lauro led the three members of "Swarm Storm," a Robotics Competit ion team, to their rookie contest on March 8 in Waterbury. The team, who have spent the year creat ing a competit ive, computer-powered robot, won 4 of their 12 contest.

FIRST Robotics is a global mentor-based program to encourage young people to study engineering, science, technology, and math. The THS team has been working with a local team of experienced members to create their motorized machine. The students, Sophomores Joanna Jusup and Sophia Lestrud and Freshman Jacob Apruzzese (pictured), debuted their machine to thunderous applause at the February 28 Pep Rally.

Lauro explains that she took advantage of a local team of experts to get this program up and running. Steve Wootton, the second lead mentor brought along his daughter Skylar, son Eli and family friend Dan Arnson. Wootton's kids graduated from Northwestern Regional High School in Winchester CT where he began mentoring and his kids helped lead their team to many championships.

Ult imate Automotive in Cromwell, CT, lent the team a box truck for transportat ion during this school year.

The next competit ion is the weekend of March 20.

A message from Jenna Nikirk, THS's Child Development Teacher: The THS Preschool Lab has started its new semester and the new Child Development I and returning Child Development II students are already hard at work! The preschoolers look forward to visits from their ?Special Friends? every day and love every minute of their t ime together. This new group of CD I students were extremely proact ive and dove right into ?Book Look? t ime during their first lab period with preschoolers. Without direct ion from the classroom staff, they each found a spot to read to their new preschool friends. We show the high school students how language and literacy is the foundation for learning in our program, and so this was a beautiful, heart-warming sight to see!
