Students will conduct an experiment to collect and identify a gas.

Students will identify and conduct proper lab safety.

Students will properly set up apparatus to collect a gas.

Students will identify all reactions as physical or chemical and support their decision with evidence.

Students will identify the gas produced by experimental results.

NaHCO3 + CaCl2

Sodium Bicarbonate solution and Calcium Chloride solution

Purpose: To determine if the reaction is a chemical or physical reaction. To identify

an unknown gas.

Materials:

•Ring Stand with clamp•NaHCO3

•CaCl2•Water•Bucket•Large test tube w/ stopper•Small test tube w/stopper•Rubber tubing•Glass elbow•2 drops of phenolphthalein•Glass stirring rod•Metal spatula•(2) Beakers or Erlenmeyer flasks•Wood Splint•Graduated Cylinder

Procedure:

Add 60 mL of water into flask B.

5 mL of CaCl2 5mL of NaHCO3

+ +

1. Add 20 mL of water into flask A2. Add 1 drop of Phenolphthalein

Set up gas capturing apparatus as shown in the diagram. Have teacher check.__________

1.Of the solution you made in beaker B Add 10 mL of the NaHCO3 solution to the large test tube in the ring stand.

Add 10 mL of the solution from beaker A (CaCl2) to the large test tube and immediately stopper test tube.

Place test tube full of gas into the Clamp in the test tube holder

1. Allow the liquid in the large test tube to settle for several minutes.

2. Stopper the inverted test tube in the bucket and remove. Be careful not to lose any of the gas.

HOW DO WE IDENTIFY

THE GAS????

Steps for flame test:1. Use tongs to hold splint 2. I will ignite wood splint3. Carefully put flame into test tube4. Record Observations

Steps for glowing splint test :1.Extinguish flame if necessary2.Carefully put glowing splint into test tube3.Record Observations
