Purpose module & analysis:
This experiment is intended to give the student a quick exposure to the laboratory equipment
which will be used in this course:a) Dc power supply.b) Digital multi-meter " DMM" .c) Function generator
Procedure to follow in lab:
1) Dc power supply:Before performing the following procedure, make a neat sketch of the power-supply frontpanel;
- apply input power ;turn the current limit control to the maximum ; turn the coarse and fine
voltage controls to the maximum select the voltage meter
And record the value.- turn both the coarse and fine voltage control to the minimum;
select a current ; place a short circuit between the (+) (-) terminal ; turn the fine control slowly up
until maximum current indicated and record the value.- select voltage and record its reading.
-select the current meter; gradually turn the current limit control down (CCW) and record.
2) Digital multi-meterBefore performing the following procedure, make a neat sketch of the" DMM " front panel;a) Resistance measurement
- obtain a resistance decade box ; prepare the DMM for resistance ; connect the DMM to the box
and set
All switches to zero; select to auto range & record its reading; repeat with the smallest rangesetting.
-select one arbitrary value of resistance in each ranges; record value.
b) Direct current Measurement :
- set the coarse and fine voltage on the power supply to minimum ;select a current ;turn the
current control to maximum ; place short circuit between(+) & (-) terminals; adjust the current to .5A ; Disconnect the short CCt .
_ prepare the DMM to high range (2 A)
_ without looking at the DMM adjust current for reading of 1 A on the panel; record the DMM

c) Direct voltage Measurement
-adjust the power supply to 10 volts and use the DMM to measure voltage as (+) to (-),,(+) toGnd ,, (-) to Gnd .
-connect the (-) and Gnd & measure the voltage between (+) and Gnd with DMM .
-remove all connections from the power adjust the voltage to 25 V. and measure the (-)to(+)
output voltage with the DMM
3) The function generator
before performing the following procedure , make a neat sketch of the FG front panel;- Turn the power on ; turn Dc offset to off, set frequency to (1 kHz)
- set the function selector to sinusoidal and the amplitude to maximum measure RMS using
DMM.-set the amplitude to minimum; measure the output with DMM Calculate the dynamic range as a
simple ratio:
Vmax/Vin in db : 20 log(Vmax / Vmin).
-return to max amplitude setting: increase the frequency to 10kHZ, & record the reading with
DMM.Repeat with 100 kHz, 1 MHz
What you learn from the experiment:After completion of the experiment must be that I have learned how to use
Dc power supply and Digital multi-meter and the function generator.And calculate the resistance and dc (voltage and current) .
