~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING
As we finish our school year, I would like to congratulate our students as well as their parents for
completing a successful year at Intermediate East. Your children have made great strides, from their
academic gains to their social well being. As they travel through their middle school experiences
they have proven themselves to be caring members of our school community.
Thank you for all that you have done to make this academic year a successful one. It was a pleasure
to have been given the opportunity to share in so many accomplishments with your children. I
would also like to thank our PTO for their outstanding efforts during the school year.
I wish everyone a healthy and happy summer and the best of luck next year!
Abigail, are students in Toms River Schools.
STOP THE DRAMA
During the week of May 29th, Intermediate East students presented an anti-bullying program, Stop
the Drama, to the 5th
graders at East Dover, Cedar Grove, Silver Bay, and Hooper Avenue
Elementary Schools. These talented students performed “situational theatre” based upon writing
samples of the students from these elementary schools. Intermediate East students in collaboration
with Ms. Neuhoff, Director, wrote scripts about real bullying situations that were experienced by the
elementary school students. These skits dealt with the many types of bullying including
cyberbullying (i.e., texting, twitter and facebook posting), teasing, threatening, making fun of
someone, damage to property, spreading rumors, and many others. By using real life situations, the
anti-bullying message was more meaningful and relevant to the students. The Intermediate East
students also served as positive role models to the elementary school students, and hopefully, they
were able to relieve any fears or concerns that these students may have about coming to Intermediate
East.
Throughout the presentation, effective anti-bullying strategies were provided to students. All of
the presentations were well received by students, teachers, and administrators. Hopefully, our
elementary school students learned a lot from the program and will know how to handle bullying and
harassment situations if they arise. Special thanks to everyone involved in this worthwhile program!
SPRING VOCAL/INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT
The 2013 Spring Chorus and Orchestra Concert was held on May 23rd
. Ms. LaRicci, the new vocal
teacher at Intermediate East, led the 6th
grade, 7th
and 8th
grade, and Advanced Chorus in songs about
love and friendship. Brianna Ford and Kelly Pesciotta beautifully sang the solo in I Dreamed a
Dream from the Broadway musical Les Miserable. Each member of the Advanced Chorus was
featured during Seasons of Love, also from a Broadway musical, Rent, and Rose Lees and Summer
Munson sang the solo in The Shoop Shoop Song. Ms. LaRicci is excited to continue working with
the students and prepare for next year‟s concerts!
Congratulations to Ms. Oz and the orchestra for a concert well done. This year‟s spring concert was
a huge success and they audience enjoyed their performance.
The Concert opened with the Chamber group performing “Brandenburg Concerto #3” featuring Julia
McGoohan, Kristen Lindenmayer, Alexa Leon, Tyler Sacko, Mackenzie Casais, Kyle Garrison,
Alexandra Ryan, Mia Rankin, Regina Vahey, and Doug Pentifallo. The orchestras selections
included “The Barber of Seville”, “Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da” by the Beatles, Carly Rae Jepsen‟s “Call Me
Maybe”, “Halo Theme”, a crowd favorite “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction, which
featured Nick Fiorello on guitar, Green Days “21 Guns”, and closed out the concert with “Fame.”
Fun was had by all.
SPRING INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CONCERT
Congratulations to Mrs. Lovinfosse and the Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble for
a very successful Spring Concert. Each group gave outstanding performances at all 3 day shows for
the student body and the night concert for family and friends.
The 6th
grade Concert Band opened the concert with the Star Spangled Banner, followed by
Declaration and Dance, Dynamite, Calypso Magic and Born This Way, which featured Adam
Gamba and Mike Molas on Drum Set.
The 7th
and 8th
grade Symphonic Band then took the stage and performed West Side Story. There
was an Alto Sax solo performed by Renee Suarez, Jacob Bernstein, Jason DaCunza and Sean
Ferguson. Next the group played Pyramids, Pirates of the Caribbean and Funkytown which featured
Paul Bianchini on bells.
The last group to perform was the 7th
and 8th
grade Wind Ensemble. We opened with the Theme
from Family Guy. Mike Pape played the Drum Set for this number. Next we featured our
Trombone section and played a piece called the Trombone Tiger Rag. Trombone soloists were
Dillon Clark, Casey Masterson, Bailey Kube and Edward Richards. Our 3rd
selection, which again
featured Mike Pape on Drum set was the popular Adele tune, Skyfall. Our final and most
challenging piece was a Spanish March entitled Amparito Roca.
TECHNOLOGY CLUB
The Technology Club consists of students who want to expand their knowledge of computers and
technology. Some students use the club to create multimedia assignments for academic classes,
while exploring how to incorporate music, video and photo manipulation into projects.
I would like to wish all the club members a wonderful and safe summer.
Congratulations to all the 8th
grade graduates!!!!
THE POETRY SLAM
The Intermediate East Poetry Slam of 2013 revealed some top-notch writing on the parts of the
entrants. Once again, independent students, as well as literary club members, composed and
presented their creations in a highly professional and proficient manner. This year's judges for the
competition were Mrs. Allison Knight (L.A. grade 7), Ms. Sheridan Moore (L.A. grade 7), Ms.
Holly Bryne (Media Specialist), Mrs. Christy Downs (L.A. Supervisor), and Mr. Tom Lanza (S.S.
Supervisor). The program was coordinated by Mrs. Beth Mandell (L.A. grade 6) who also runs the
literary club.
Although there were many wonderfully qualified poems, winners had to be chosen. In 3rd place
(grade 7), winning a gift certificate from the school's store, was Emily Ostermann with her poem
entitled "Black and White." Tied for second place, and winning gift certificates from Barnes &
Noble, were Mallory Feign (grade 7) with her poem entitled "A Friend," and Emily Cook (grade 8)
with her poem entitled, "So, You Want to Be a Bully?" Our first place winner, who was awarded a
free yearbook, was Merri Schick (grade 7) with her poem, "If I Lived in a Book."
Congratulations to ALL of you- you are ALL winners!
CYCLE NEWS-FEATURING
“A FAREWELL TO OUR
8TH
GRADERS”
CYCLE 81
This has been an amazing year at Intermediate East! At the beginning of the year, everyone was
very eager to not only see all their friends again, but to also join various clubs and sports. We
learned a lot from our teachers and this knowledge will help us throughout high school. We stayed
strong through Hurricane Sandy and we offered our support toward those who were affected. It was
also very exciting to see our talented friends perform in the musical “Foot Loose”. Students were
dedicated to win the Rocket Race to the Top and the classrooms were crammed with students
coming to before school help. Everyone supported each other and had school spirit during the
competition, especially the teachers. Phil Lingat and Gavin McAfee even wore a skirt to show their
school spirit. The entire cycle was ecstatic to have won the BBQ at the end of the year. Everyone
greatly missed Ms. Hull when she had to leave, yet her replacement teacher, Ms. Foerg, is very nice
as well. We are also anxious to attend our dance at the end of the year and of course everyone is
looking forward to graduation too. Many students are performing in the talent show and those who
aren‟t can‟t wait to see what their talents are. Joey Del Deo is a very talented magician and was
even voted as best magician of the cycle. It will be an excellent way to finish off the year. We are
all going to miss Intermediate East but we are looking forward to experiencing new things in high
school. We had many ups and downs over the year, overall, it was awesome!
CYCLE 82
Memories, created to be treasured and made to last a lifetime. Something we will always hold close
to our hearts that make us who we are. We look back on them on our darkest days, like the light at
the end of a tunnel. This year, in cycle 82, we had made enough memories to fill a lifetime with
endless bliss. We did not just make a few friends; we became a family, a crazy dysfunctional, loving
family. Teachers are expected to help students with their journey to adulthood, but ours did much
more. When we look back at all the time we had with them, only one word comes to mind:
unforgettable. Going to class isn‟t something we looked down upon; it‟s ourselves in knowledge
and life lessons. We had our ups and downs, but like every good rollercoaster you can‟t help but
love it.
To start off, have you ever seen a teacher as lovable as a teddy bear? Well, we have Mr. LeRiche,
our social studies teacher. History comes to life in his class especially in his notes. Although they
lack in color, they are engulfed in riveting details. Each word paints a picture in your mind. We got
to experience every battle, from the Revolutionary war to the Civil war, as if we were bystanders.
We never had to get nervous on tests because all of our doubts were resolved the day before. We
discussed the essay questions that were going to be on the test in detail and later wrote them for
homework. This helped us study and kept our inner laziness at bay. If this still wasn‟t enough, you
were encouraged to stay after for extra help. By taking this opportunity, not only did you prepare for
the test, but also Mr. LeRiche generously gave you a study guide and five extra bonus points. As
you can see, Mr. LeRiche not only gave us the road to success, but helped us along the way when we
got lost.
Every family has that one uncle that will drive you crazy with love. For our family, it‟s Mr. Peters,
our science teacher. Not only is he intelligent, but he will make you laugh until your sides hurt.
You‟ll never know what to expect in his class, from eye-popping notes filled with vibrant colors to
alien invaded walls. Like the beginning to every good story you need an introduction, for the start of
every chapter you need Bill Nye. This gives you a head start to the upcoming knowledge you will
receive. Though he works you to the bone, he never forgot to add a spark of fun. During the
holidays he takes it to the next level. Dressing like an elf, handing out candy, and setting up a rocket
tree covered from head to toe in lights shouldn‟t be unexpected of such a jaunty teacher. Though
chemistry is a bumpy road for many students Mr. Peters helped us climb over it and we can always
count on him to do it in the future.
Though shy at first, as the year went on we really got to know Ms. deRouville. Just like the loving
Aunt in any average family she will always support you. Learning Algebra can be tricky, but with
Ms. deRouville by your side every step was a piece of cake. The lessons were at a perfect pace,
never too slow, never too fast, and always just right. To top it all off, we always had someone to
depend on if things became cryptic, whether it was by her or another. We always got to work in
groups which proved to be a great benefit to many. By doing this, it was never a struggle to get
assistance. If ever you felt lost, all you had to do was ask and she would bring you up to speed with
a quick lunch study. Though Math can be one of the toughest subjects it never feels like it with Ms.
deRouville nearby.
Lights, Camera, Action! Three little words Ms. Neuhoff can never get enough. From running an
outstanding play to being our utmost favorite teacher, she does it all. Not only are we educated, but
also we learned important life lessons to value throughout life. From hair raising Edgar Allen Poe to
heart throbbing Flowers for Algernon. We experienced every type of story possible with the same
liveliness she conveyed to it. In our family she is our older cousin that serves as our role model.
Not only that, but shared stories of her pass that will help us in our future. If there is one teacher we
can relate to it‟s her. She is as loyal to us as if we were her kids. She is truly trustworthy, whenever
we have a problem. She is our outlet. In the novel Red Kayak, the main character Brady never had
anyone to confess to, this idea is absolutely foreign to us, for this year we always had Ms. Neuhoff.
The drama in middle school can be suffocating, but with Ms. Neuhoff we can finally take a breath.
We were also lucky enough to have Mrs. Parker with us every step of the way. She guided us with
her gentle nature and always encouraged us to do our best. She took time from her lunch to work
with us if we needed extra help and we could not have made it through this year without her.
Premature birth is a tragedy that no one likes to encounter. Fortunately, our school is generous
enough to host a March of Dimes fundraiser. Our cycle took this as a challenge and was committed
to helping others. One of the things we did for the March of Dimes fundraiser was having a pennies
war in our social studies class. This gave us the opportunity to use spare change for good. We would
fill up bins with pennies and the cycle with the least amount of pennies would win and gain a bagel
party. We also sold coffee and hot chocolate in science class to go along with the bake sale we
hosted. All day we got to smell the sweet aroma of coffee and baked goods as we walked down the
hallway. To continue the fun we got to do something most students only dream of… pieing our
teachers. For only $5 you can release your anger by throwing a whip cream pie in your teachers
face. Not forgetting to mention the chance to play rock band in class. As you can see our teachers
care not only for furthering our education, but also helping the community.
This year we couldn‟t have worked harder, but with our teachers we barely noticed it. There was
never a moment in class that we didn‟t have a smile on our faces. Each day was a new adventure;
which led to a greater understanding of the world around us. This year we became a family and now
that the year is coming to an end we are saddened to see it pass. We will always hold our memories
close to our hearts. As our rollercoaster ride comes to an end, we need to sit back, hold on tight and
enjoy it while it lasts.
CYCLE 83
8th
grade has been a blast for cycle 83 students! We have had many unforgettable moments,
friendships, and laughs. We have also learned so much throughout our years here at Intermediate
East. This year, a number of activities really stood out to us in particular, especially the dance-off in
the gymnasium before Winter Break.
In social studies, we enjoyed hosting our very own election earlier in the school year. Mr. Cuneo
arranged voting booths in our classroom, and we acted as poll workers. We checked for student IDs
and monitored the booths. 1,312 students participated in the election! It kept us very busy. Other
memorable lessons included the court cases, Revolutionary War activities, and Rebuild Richmond
lesson.
Ms. Lappostato taught us many helpful math skills needed to be successful in high school and life.
The hands-on probability activities were one of the most favorite and helpful lessons. We have been
working hard on our final math projects, where we had to select a career related to math—which
there is an endless number of! More recently, we solved linear equations and examined parabolas on
graphic calculators, which was pretty fun.
In science, Mrs. Cavaliere‟s water bottle tornado lab helped us visualize tornados; we especially
remember this lesson now with all the recent tragedies in Oklahoma due to tornados. Another fun
activity involved camouflaging paper butterflies around the classroom. We had a competition on
who could hide his or her butterfly the best in the classroom. We‟re sure that years from now, there
will still be butterflies found!
For language arts, we enjoyed reading Swallowing Stones with Mrs. Sroczynski. We remember our
creative biography projects and presentations; we will also never forget the intense persuasive
debates. Ms. Betz put our seats in a book-club arrangement in the classroom when we began
Stargirl, and we have had many great discussions on life such as peer pressure, individuality, and
high school. We congratulate Mrs. Sroczynski on her beautiful baby boy!
We will cherish these memories along with all of the many others made here at Intermediate East.
Our hard work has paid off and we anxiously anticipate graduation and the 8th
grade dance. We all
look forward to moving onto high school and using the tools that our teachers have taught us.
CYCLE 84 By Casey Masterson
Sadly, this year marks the year the eighth graders leave for high school. I am positive all the eighth
grade students will have heavy hearts in their last days here. It is not just the school the students will
miss, nor is it just Intermediate East‟s famous “bubble”. I feel what all the eighth grade students will
miss the most are the teachers. These wonderful people were our guides through a three year long
journey inside Intermediate East. The teachers that helped us students the most in all our three years
were the eighth grade teachers. Not only did they guide us through our last year at Intermediate East,
but they prepared us for high school. Cycle 84‟s guides through our eighth grade school year were
Mr. Spiwak, Mr. Maskale, Mrs. Jones, and Mrs. Dell‟ Acqua.
In what class can you learn about war, assassinations, and political rivals? If you guessed social
studies, you are correct. This year, Mr. Spiwak taught us about American history. We learned about
various wars such as the Revolutionary War, the Mexican-American War, and more recently the
Civil War. Just a few days ago we learned of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. As far as
political rivals, we saw that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had completely different political
views. We learned that in the beginning of the year. In Mr. Spiwak‟s class we made foldables, took
notes, and even had a biography research paper. Don‟t let all this work make his class sound boring!
Mr. Spiwak made class fun by joking around with the class. Mr. Spiwak‟s humor, along with
interesting historical lessons made Mr. Spiwak‟s class a blast!
Chemistry. Genetics. Ecosystems. These are just a few topics we learned in Mr. Maskale‟s science
class. At first glance, these topics may sound hard. However with vivid explanations and fun
experiments, Mr. Maskale made these topics graspable. For example, to show how a butterfly‟s
camouflage would help it survive in its ecosystem we colored in paper butterflies and hid them all
over the classroom. When we needed a break we would watch Bill Nye videos, and eat popcorn.
Let‟s not forget those incredible animal clips he shows in the beginning of class! I‟m sure I speak for
all of us when I say we will miss Mr. Maskale‟s science class.
Math usually sends fear into the hearts of students. Most children see it as a challenging subject. Not
with Mrs. Jones. Throughout the period, Mrs. Jones will go around the room and explain to you what
to do in vivid detail. Even the most confused of our cycle‟s students will understand once Mrs. Jones
explains the problem to you. In class we learned many different things about algebra that will help us
next year in high school. We also did a lot of preparation for the NJ ASK. One thing most children
will never forget in her class are Fractions the monkey and Fractions the turtle. Mrs. Jones bought
these stuffed critters to remind us that fractions are our friends. Mrs. Jones class is definitely not all
work and no play. She would allow us to play chess or bring in board games during game day. Game
day is definitely always a blast! Thanks to Mrs. Jones, we now know „critical‟ points in algebra to
prepare us for next year.
This essay would not be complete without mentioning Mrs. Dell‟ Acqua. She loves George Clooney,
her softball team, and sports. Throughout the year we read novels like Swallowing Stones, Warriors
Don’t Cry, and Give A Boy A Gun. We even read short stories like The Tell Tale Heart and The
Adventure of the Speckled Band. Every morning we would have a journal topic. They were usually
fun, and a conversation on the topic would usually always ensue. We also did a lot of practice for the
NJ ASK. It would not be an accurate representation of Mrs. Dell‟ Acqua‟s class if I did not mention
the fun things. For example, because of a bet I made with her we got to watch the Avengers in class.
That was arguably the best day of school in the history of mankind. Mrs. Dell‟Acqua truly is an
amazing language arts teacher.
In conclusion, our wonderful teachers will truly be missed. From their great teachings to their
colorful personalities they will always have a place in all of our hearts. I would like to thank all of
our teachers for a wonderful year on the cycle‟s behalf. We envy all the seventh grade students who
will be having you as teachers next year. Remember this Mr. Spiwak, Mr. Maskale, Mrs. Jones, and
Mrs. Dell‟ Acqua, as we move on to the next grade and on with our lives, the memories we created
with you will go on for a life time.
CYCLE 85 Written by: Mei Fang Wang
Eighth grade was a blast for most of the graduates leaving Intermediate East into their vast transition
to high school. The last year may be heartbreaking, but with the teachers in Cycle 85 they made the
year a worthwhile memory. Cycle 85 is a unique cycle with not just four, but five astonishing
teachers!
For science, we have Ms. Skripko. She is an excellent teacher with a great personality. In this class,
students observe tons of experiments, whether they are hands-on or just observing, it is always
amazing. Some experiments include finding how velocity can affect the flow rate and the burning of
objects to show chemical reaction.
For social studies, we have Mrs. Morsch, and she is a great teacher with tons of interesting stories. In
this class, you feel like you‟re traveling back in time to when the history actually took place with the
elaborate stories she tells.
For math, Cycle 85 has Mr. Cranston. He is a very intelligent teacher. In this class, the different
classes learn different objectives, but when it comes to fun, we all do it together. On March 14, 3.14
Pi Day, the whole cycle had a pie eating contest to see who can eat pie the quickest. Along with this,
most students in 854 made shirts.
For language arts, we have Mrs. Davern, and she is a wonderful teacher. In this class, in the
beginning of the year, each class learned a unit about Edgar Allen Poe, who was a famous short story
writer and poet. At the end of the unit, everyone made skits for their classmates to see. But, let‟s not
forget about our inclusion teacher, Mrs. Stewart. She might not teach a specific subject, but she helps
students in all the classes. She is an extra hand everyone needs. Without her, the cycle wouldn‟t be
the same. What makes this cycle special is the bond between all five teachers. In this cycle, usually
on Fridays, we have a cycle unity day where everyone dresses up the same to show our leadership. It
has truly been an honor for everyone to have the opportunity to learn from these teachers.
CYCLE 86
The students of Cycle 86 had a wonderful 8th
grade year!
In Mrs. Slavinski‟s Language Arts class we had another successful year with our Read 180 program.
While reading The Lightning Thief we had a Greek festival to learn about the culture of Ancient
Greece--we wore togas, had hummus & chips, ambrosia salad, grapes, olives and sparkling cider.
Mrs. Slavinski used our new document camera to provide visual support to our Language Arts and
Social Studies lessons--such as modeling various types of writing and looking at photos and maps.
In Mrs. Thoms‟s Math and Science classes we had fun doing amazing “hands on” projects that
helped us understand the concepts that we read about in our books. We made potato chips from a
variety of potatoes to help us understand biodiversity. We created name kaleidoscopes in Math class
that helped us better visualize the concepts of reflection and rotation.
Our cycle also won the "Rocket Race to the Top Challenge" and is looking forward to the end of the
year "Grill & Chill" with our classmates.
We will hold the memories from our time here at Intermediate East in our hearts always! We wish
all of our classmates and teachers a relaxing and fun-filled summer vacation!
