Trimble Vision - 1994CENTIMETERS EVERYWHERE FOR EVERYONE

▪ This addresses the need of the professional user but barriers remain to address “Everyone”

▪ To support the needs of the broader base of users who use positioning to support their primary tasks we needed to improve all of the following:

– Simplicity– Ease of use– Convenience– Affordability Simplified -No base required

2016

Finding a solution for users who periodically need accurate positioning

▪ Positioning supports the primary job function

▪ Examples:– Engineers doing inspections– Field technicians– Geotechs– Landscape contractors– Builders– Drain layers– Crop advisors– Sports people Closing the price/performance gap

to meet their needs

▪ Platforms▪ The emergence of the smartphone as a commonly used

mobile tool providing new levels of– Simple, easy to use, convenient and affordable

▪ Data▪Increased availability of a broad range of digital data services

▪ Connectivity▪ Connectivity enabled by the growth in cellular coverage, use

of the Cloud and SaaS based solutions

The enablers

To address the needs of a broader range of users by leveraging the smartphone to improve

▪ Simplicity

▪ Ease of use

▪ Convenience

▪ Affordability

Simplicity

▪ Turn on anywhere in the world and operate

– With high accuracy

▪ Subject to compliance with local laws on spatial data

▪ Zero configuration with Trimble Apps

– Auto connect for project and map data via TrimbleConnect/TerraFlex

Ease of use

▪ Automated connection to your project

– No data upload/download required

▪ Uses cell phone connection or the antenna for corrections– No IP addresses to configure for Trimble correction

services

– No decisions required on which network

▪ At start up automatically select the best available correction service based on location and subscription level

– Global coverage for sub meter services using RTX

– VRSNow for higher accuracyapplications

▪ Options to use other networks

Convenience▪ Uses your smartphone

– Typically carried all the time

▪ Small, lightweight, highly portable antenna– 130mm x 60mm (5.1” x 2.4”)

– Weighs only 300gm (11 oz)

Convenience▪ A “glovebox” device

– Available anywhere, anytime

Affordability

▪ Enabled by a new business model– Download the app– Purchase the low cost antenna– Subscribe to the required level of service

▪ Pay based on usage

▪ Provision to to scale up/down with minimal capital expenditure

▪ Pay from operating expense as a part of a specific project

So what is Catalyst V1.0?▪ A software defined GNSS receiver

– Multi-frequency (L1 and L2)

– Multi-constellation (GPS and Galileo)

▪ Designed for embedding into Apps for mobile platforms (smartphones and tablets)

– Android only

▪ Supported by a small, lightweight, high performance dual frequency antenna

– Trading best performance for more affordable pricingTrimble DA1 with Samsung 7” tablet

running TerraFlex

So what does Catalyst V1.0 achieve?

▪ >10X useable accuracy improvement(from a smartphone)

▪ Low cost L1/L2 cost antenna

▪ 80% weight reduction*

▪ 90% power reduction*

*c.f. smart antenna

Why have an external antenna?

▪ Required to get the performance

– Current smartphones are single frequency

– Current smartphone antennas are designed for cost not accuracy

▪ Enables upgrading from meter level to sub-metre and centimeters

– Simply subscribe to a higher level of accuracy as required

Catalyst as a system: Three key components

▪ A Catalyst enabled application– Has embedded support for the

Catalyst SoftGNSS receiver service

– E.g. Terraflex

▪ The Trimble DA1 digital antenna

▪ Your subscription to a positioning service level

Catalyst as a system: Working with other applications

▪ Trimble Mobile Manager– Publishes high accuracy location to the

phone’s location manager

– Then available to most 3rd party applications

– Not as well integrated▪ Have to switch between apps to see

status

– Great way to see the value before using the SDK to make the app “Catalyst ready”

▪ Accuracy based on your subscriptionto a positioning service level

So how well does it perform*?

Sub-metre RTX service, satellite delivered.

Two runs in opposite directions taken a week apart

*Provisional results – subject to final performance testing

How does it compare?▪ Successfully closes “the gap” in positioning

performance by significantly enhancing themobile devices’ positioning accuracy

– Delivers <1m and centimetre accuracies across a range of environments

▪ Less accurate in harsh environments thancurrent GIS offerings

– Constellation

– Better multi-path rejection enabled by thewide band measurements in our Maxwell based hardware receivers

▪ Takes longer to get the centimetre accuracies– Convergence time is a function ofthe

constellation▪ Less satellites in total and less dual frequency

satellites

Provides an option to meet a different set of user requirements

POSITIONING PROFESSIONAL USER POSITIONING SUPPORTED USER

▪ Industrial grade quality

▪ Works in all weather– Extremes of hot, cold, and wet

▪ Battery lasts all day

▪ Expect to last for years -durability essential

▪ Most productive

▪ Capital purchase

▪ Prosumer grade quality

▪ Works in “normal” weather– Limited only by the phone

▪ Battery lasts long enough tosupport the primary job

– External battery options

▪ Expect to update as smartphone technologies update

▪ Primarily operating expense

Summary▪ An exciting new receiver option that delivers a breakthrough in:

– Simplicity– Ease of use– Convenience– Affordability

▪ Enables positioning on demand services

▪ Delivers unprecedented ease of use for sub-metre positioning globally– Ubiquitous coverage enabled by satellite and cellular delivery

▪ Enables the new users in your organization to “self service”– Works with the broader Trimble ecosystem– Complements your existing hardware based systems– Is compatible with your data/workflows

▪ Is the “Catalyst” for a host of new applications for high accuracy GNSS– Enabled through our SDK for the App developer community
