CURRENT SITUATION OF IRRIGATION INFRSTRUCTURE

• Based on irrigation schemes, most of the few existing irrigation schemes need to be rehabilitated

Components of irrigation infrastructure

• Water source ( Water reservoir, lake, river, spring, wells, borehole)

• Water conveyance system from source to field (canals or pipes)

• Water abstraction (diversion structures, weirs, turnout, vertical check gates and gates)

• Facilitating equipment (water pumps, siphons, sprinklers, micro-jets, drippers)

Components of irrigation infrastructure cont.

• Energy dissipating structures (drops, cutes, stilling basins and pressure regulating valves

• Structures (farm roads, bunds, culverts)• Field• Drainage system

Design procedure

• Field survey

• Production of topographical map

• Irrigation layout plan

CHALLENGES

• Lack of maintenance culture• Lack of equipment• Erratic weather conditions• Lack of adequate data on rainfall • Funding problem• River bank erosion

ACTION PLAN

• Development of water harvesting technologies

- Potential sites identification basing on topography and run-off capacity

- Soil profiles• Training; Farmers, contractors• Rehabilitation of existing schemes
