How to use these lesson plans
This lesson plan packet contains the following:
Book list
1-page weekly lesson plan grid o Alternate weekly grids for 4 day, 3 day, and 2 day programs
5 daily lesson plan sheets
2-page centers explanation
Printables
Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books
you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.
The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds,
whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.
The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if
you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just print the templates and handwrite your plans.
The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are
included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.
The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There
are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.
You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

we want to learn), and L (what we learned). Fill in the K column. Optional: Record the animal being researched in
the science journal.

Centers
Arts & Crafts Winter Collage – use the printable characters, white paint, snowflake confetti, etc. to create a winter scene. Stick Puppets – Make character stick puppets and design a back drop for a puppet theater.
Science Non-Fiction Books – Place a variety of books about the animals from The Mitten in the reading center. Children can look through real photos and information. Animals in the Snow – Draw pictures of what different animals are doing in the snow (in science journals). Which animals might blend in with the snow?
Pretend Play
Active Story Retelling – Place the animal cutouts in pretend "homes" around the dramatic play center, with the mitten in the middle. As you reread the story have kids find the animal and do some pretend play as they act out the character finding the mitten and getting inside. Get in the Mitten – Set up a sleeping bag or sheet and pretend it’s the mitten from the book. Children can pretend to be characters from the story, seeing how many of them can fit in their “mitten”.
Literacy Animal Words – Use magnetic letters, letter tiles, or other alphabet manipulatives, along with printable word cards. Children make the character’s names on the mitten word cards. Letter Matching Puzzles – Children can use the letter cards as puzzles, matching uppercase and lowercase letters. They can also be used as guides alongside a sensory writing tray filled with salt or fake snow.

Centers
Math Mitten Matching – Use the printable number and number word mittens. Children match the items, and then add the appropriate number of animals to each number. Use dotted number mittens in place of number word mittens, as needed. Shape Hunt – Use the shape mittens. Children find items around the classroom that are the correct shape and place them near the shape mittens.
Sensory Retelling Sensory Bin – Place cotton balls or fake snow into a bin. Add animal figures or cut outs, along with mittens, for retelling play. Texture Mittens – Place various textures on old mittens (rough, smooth, bumpy, etc.). Children can run the textures over their skin and use words to describe what they feel.
Building
Stack the Animals – Tape the story’s animals to blocks. See how many can be stacked up before falling over. Animals in the Woods – Children can use blocks or LEGO to create dens for the different animals from the book. Add animal manipulatives (or printables) to the block area, too.
