Consistency Efforts Stacey Sketo-Rosener, AVP Undergrad Advising

Gating courses• Depts: please respond to my request for confirmation if you haven’t already (if you have, thanks!)• Enrollment closes to continuing students 11:59 PM July 19• Priority groups enroll beginning July 23• Non-attendees enroll August 6-10• Enrollment date for international students eliminated• Gating practices may need to change based on new enrollment appt process.• Report in Infoview showing enrollment appts:Shared Academic Advising Folder > Students > Enrollment: New Student Appointments

Choosing classes• “Course Highlights” lists will be available next week, emailed and posted at advising.ucsc.edu• Major advising summaries include first quarter classes for majors; information “blessed” by departments• Encourage students to use worksheet in orientation booklet to guide their learning throughout orientation day

Transfer Prerequisites• APV (AP Verified) scores will be in MyUCSC week of July 16. Official scores serve as prerequisite and credit is granted. Some students’ scores might not be posted.

• We’ll distribute a handout advisers can give to students whose AP scores aren’t in; details what they need to do (contact Janet Reedy and/or request scores).

Transfer Prerequisites• Course transfer credit won’t be entered before orientation, but students may have unofficial transcripts.• Advisers can post “Other Credit” to allow students to enroll if it’s a needed prerequisite. Students must still ensure record is here to get credit.• Intended major adviser enters “other credit;” does not need to go to course-sponsoring agency.• Like last year, ask that major advisers be available in afternoons via chat and/or email if students or advisers need prerequisite help. If possible, have a Saturday plan.

Supporting Transfer Students● “Other credit” team effort: Mondays July 16 and

23, 9:30 - 1:00, Kerr 8. Sign up in advance.● “Third class” training for department advisers:

Requirement)● ELWR-required students with AWPE-ELL score of

first quarter: be ready to help students prioritize in case they’re taking both core and writing (small number of students)

Next steps:● “Topics to include” list will go out today● Request contact information for coordinated

communication on orientation day● Math guide (maybe)

Computer Science Impaction● First-year students must have been admitted as

proposed Computer Science in order to pursue the Computer Science major.

● Students who are unsure whether or not they wish to pursue Computer Science should keep their Computer Science proposed major. They can add a second proposed major, but don’t replace!

● The Computer Science Frosh Orientation is only for students admitted to this major.

Proposed Major Status Policy● Students who wish to declare most BSOE majors must

be listed as a proposed BSOE major. ● Please do not switch any students proposed major but

instead send to us during orientation in the PM or students can fill out the change of proposed major form here: http://tinyurl.com/proposedbsoe

Changes to Bioengineering & Bioinformatics majors

● The Biomolecular Engineering Department has merged the Bioinformatics major with the Biomolecular concentration of the Bioengineering major to form new major: Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics (BMEB)

● Common core and two separate concentrations ● Two remaining concentrations still exist under

Bioengineering - Bioelectronics and Assistive Technology: Motor

BSOE Admissions Policy● Transfer students who applied to a BSOE major that

were denied will not be able to switch to a BSOE major.

● Transfer students who did not list an Engineering major on their UC application who are interested in a BSOE major will need to submit an appeal. Google form will be created soon. Appeals will be reviewed after summer orientation.
