DIVINGCONDITIONSANDSEALIFE

Visibilityhasgenerallygoodin2016,withafewbeastlyeasterliesandnottoomuchrain.UnfortunatelyforBaskingSharksand theseveralhundredpeopleonouremail listwanting to see them, therewasn’tmuch plankton in the water either, so our Basking Shark sightings were very rare last year. The seatemperaturereachedamaximumof17°Cand inDecember itwasaround12°C.Thereweresightingsoflots of other wonderful marine life both off the boat and on the shore dive... Sunfish, Conger eels,Thornback Rays, octopus, Cuckoo wrasse, seals, crawfish, barrel jellyfish, several different types ofdolphins and lots more! It was even reported that Orcas were spotted in Cornwall, off the RoselandPeninsula,althoughwehaveyettoseethemhereatPorthkerris!CREW2016Theusualcrewarestillhere...Mike, Jo,DaveandDarren.NewstaffmemberMilohelpedruntheshopandofficewithJoandwasalsoourPADI/BSACinstructor.SamandNickranthecafelastyearandhadanamazing newmenu... Afterhis accident,Mike ismakinga good recoveryandhe startedrunning the CAT again in May. Although we had considered selling the CAT, it still proves to be anextremelypopularboat,especiallywithlong-termregularswholiketoopportunityofgoingfurtherafield.

COMPETITIONWewouldliketohaveanewdesignforthebackofourPorthkerrist-shirts,polosandhoodies.Sowearerunningacompetitionforpeopletosubmitdesignsforthechanceofwinningtheprizeoftwoboatdivesfor two people on the Kitten. (This is a value of £90.00). To keep the production cost to aminimum,designs should ideally be one colour (white). FREEDIVINGATPORTHKERRISGeorgina andDannhavebeen running severalfreediving courses throughout the year andtheyhaveplentymoreplannedfor2017.Itisarapidly growing sport and we have organisedseveral successful freedivingchartersdivingonthelocalreefsandwrecksnearPorthkerris.

ThethreatofreopeningofDeanQuarrynexttotheMCZisstillloomingandwewillpostanyupdatesonourFacebookpage.CADS(CornwallAgainstDeanSuperQuarry)areafantasticorganisationdedicatedtoprotectingourcommunity,environmentandmarinelifehereontheLizard.

As divers are stakeholders in the MCZ, they can respond to theapplicationifthecompanydoesdecidetogoforplanningtostartuptheSuperQuarry.Whenthecompanydidtheirsurveys(grabsamplesandtowedvideos)ontheManacles,theyapparentlyfoundlittlelifethere.AnyonewhohasdivedtheManaclesorseenphotoandvideofootageknowsthatthisisnotthecaseandsincethequarryclosedseveralyearsagotherehasbeenanoticeableincreaseinthevisibilityandmarinelifefoundthere.

SEASONALFULLTIMEOFFICEMANAGERWeare looking for someone to help run the dive shop andoffice this year. The jobwould be variableworkinghours,butusuallyabout5daysaweek.Workingweekendsandbeingadiverisessential.BeingaDivemasterorDiveinstructorisnotessential,butishelpful.TENNANTFORTHEPORTHKERRISBEACHCAFÉWearelookingforsomeonetoleasethebeachcafe.TheseasonusuallystartsaroundEaster,butdoesn’treallygetbusyuntilMay,butwecanbeflexiblewithdates.Weaskthatthecafeisopen7daysaweekandopenaminimumof11amuntil2pmeachday.Althoughitisbeneficialforthetenantintheheightoftheseasontodomuchlongerhoursdependingonwhendiversstartandfinisheachday.ThereisalsotheopportunitytomaximiseincomebyofferingmealstopeoplestayingintheaccommodationandcampingatPorthkerris(i.eeveningmeals,functioneveningsetc)DIVEMASTERSWewelcomepeopletodoDivemasterinternshipshereatPorthkerris.Thecostis£300.00plusmaterialsandinaminimumof3weeks.Accommodationcanbearranged.FREELANCEDIVEINSTRUCTORSThisyearwehopetosetupasmallteamoffreelancediveinstructorstoruncoursesfromPorthkerris.
