Are You a Temple or a Party Store? Many of us have heard the statement that our body is the temple where our soul lives. A few weeks ago Barb was giving
a talk on nutrition. She asked this question of the audience. Is your body a Temple or a Party Store? It struck me that this isa great analogy for where some of us are and where some of us would like to be. Now, if we add to that the concept ofBody-Mind-Spirit, we can create a great model for how to live.
What would a Physical Temple look like? The body would be strong and muscular. The skin smooth and clear. The eyesbright and sparkling. Our nose is open and able to smell everything. Our tongue clean and able to experience the full rangeof gustatory delights (tastes) {I just love that word, gustatory}. Our hearing is sharp. We would be able to breathe fully andrun with ease. Our bounding heart provides nourishment to all our cells and tissues. Digestion and assimilation of nutrientsare flawless. The elimination of wastes through the skin, lungs, kidneys and bowels keeps our body fresh and vibrant. Thehands are flexible with excellent fine motor skills. Feet and legs carry us with poise and efficiency. Our back is strong andsupportive of all our physical activity. The body is an efficient machine doing everything we desire it to do. Daily exerciseis an enjoyable routine.
What would a Mental Temple look like? The memory is sharp and clear. We can focus or daydream, which ever weneed at the time. We are funny and enjoy a great laugh. Our thoughts are peaceful and comfortable. We see the good ineveryone and every situation. We know that everything happens for a reason and a purpose that serves us in some way, even if we do not understand it. We hang out with joyful loving people. We use our minds to plan and create great things;and we wallow in successful outcomes.
Our Spiritual Temple would have a daily spiritual practice. There would a time of prayer, meditation, and contemplation.Unconditional love for everyone we meet is automatic. Through out the day we take time to marvel at the wonder andmajesty of Gods Creation. We read and study with the innocent open mindedness of a child.
I know that most party stores in our towns are not like this and the owners do provide an important
service for many people. This analogy is not intended to offend any of those great people. But I wantyou to picture a dirty, grimy, little store that is filled with many things that we intuitively know are nothealthy for us: alcohol, tobacco, pop, coffee, junk food, pornography, processed food with manyadditives and preservative, etc. Outside are some seedy characters selling drugs. The energy of thisplace is low and dark.
We all find ourselves somewhere on the teeter totter between the Temple and the Party Store. Asyou move back and forth, day by day, keep the model of the Temple in your mind as your ideal. Youwill slowly be attracted to do those things that will bring you closer to that place where your souldoes live in a Temple.
Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

NORTH AMERICAN PRECISSYNDICATE
Spending time in the sun can re-sult in more than just fun and games. For instance, many people fnd thatas they age, their skin begins to showthe appearance of some pigmenta-tion commonly known as sun spots.
These spots can increase in numberas a person ages.Unfortunately, what many people
dont realize is that some of these sunspots may actually be actinic kerato-sis (AK), a skin condition that affects58 million Americans and has the po-tential to progress to squamous cellcarcinoma (SCC), the second-most-common skin cancer.
The good news is an educationeffort is raising awareness about theproblem and how to treat it. Thecampaign website can be found atwww.SpotSignsofAK.com.
Too Much Sun Can Be RiskyAKs are rough-textured, dry, scaly
patches on the skin that can range in
color and vary in size. They are the re-sult of years of cumulative sun dam-age and most often appear on partsof the body that are most exposed tosunlight, such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands and arms.
AKs are most common in olderadults who have spent a lot of time inthe sun during their lives. However, even routine activities such as walk-ing the dog or grabbing your mail canlead to sun damage. People who de-velop AKs typically will not developjust one. The condition will presentin numerous spots or will continueto present intermittently over time.An Effort to Raise Awareness
Dr. Ellen Marmur a dermatolo-
gist and cosmetic surgeon is rais-
ing awareness about actinic keratosisby promoting the Spot Signs of AKcampaign. The campaign is an initia-tive developed by DUSA Pharmaceu-ticals.
Said Dr. Marmur, Educationaround melanoma and other skincancers has been very strong, butactinic keratosis remains relativelyunknown.
Early Detection Is CriticalAccording to Dr. Marmur, approx-
imately 510 percent of AKs developinto squamous cell carcinoma withinan average of two years. Since there isno way to know ahead of time whichones will become cancerous, it is veryimportant to seek a dermatologists
care. Frequent skin examinations are
the key to early detection and preven-tion.
The campaign website containsinformation on the condition andhow to fnd a dermatologist, as wellas information on the range of treat-ment options available.
People who get AKs typically donot get just one, said Dr. Marmur. The years of sun damage affect en-tire regions of the skin. This is justfurther reason for adults who thinkthey have AKs to speak with theirdermatologist. And if you dont havea derm, fnd one.
For more information on AKs orto fnd a dermatologist, visit www.SpotSignsofAK.com.
