Whether your blood pressure rises a little ora lot, you can decrease tax-time stress witheight easy tips.

1. Good record keeping cuts down

time spent doing your taxes and may be required if you receive an InternalRevenue Service notice or are audited.

Records should include information thatimpacts your federal tax return, including acopy of last years return.

2. Dont procrastinate.Rushing encourages errors that can result

in lost time and money, and ultimately a re-jected return. If you havent kept good tax re-cords, you may need extra time to nd docu-ments.

3. Hundreds of changes are made tofederal tax law every year.

Dedicating a few minutes to learning aboutmajor changes can save you money and time.

At minimum, learn about the tax breaks stillavailable in the American Recovery and Rein-

vestment Act, including credits for energy im-provements to your home and green cars.Start with the IRS website at www.irs.govand click on Individuals. You dont have to

be an accountant to understand the informa-tion. Do-it-yourself tax preparation solutionsalso offer helpful information; the Tax Infor-mation tab at www.taxact.com summarizeskey changes for 2010 returns.

4. File and pay on time, or pay latefees and interest.

While state deadlines vary, 2010 federalreturns are due April 18, 2011 (April 15 is afederal holiday). Cant le by then? File Form

4868 for a six-month ling extension and payas much of your taxes as possible by April18 to minimize interest and penalties. If youcant pay all of your tax bill totaling $25,000or less, apply for a monthly payment agree-ment via Form 9465.

5. Do your taxes online or downloadtax preparation software.

Tax law can be complicated, but doing

your own taxes doesnt have to be, says Tax-ACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. Top solu-tions go well beyond completing tax formsand doing the math for you. Theyre afford-able, easy, identify potential tax-saving op-portunities, alert you of possible errors andmissing data, and provide answers if you havequestions. They even help you strategize fornext year.

6. Do comparison shopping beforechoosing a tax preparation solution.

Check out the free products. Are there feesfor certain forms or to e-le? What help isfree and what help do you have to pay for?

Will it walk you through tax implications oflife changes? Can you import data? Are youguaranteed accuracy and a maximum refund?

Can you try it risk-free? If using a paid prod-uct, at what point in the process do you haveto pay?

7. Electronically fle.Nearly 70 percent of all federal returns

were e-led last year. Unlike paper lers, youll receive e-mail conrmation when theIRS processes your return, usually within 48hours. Youll need last years adjusted grossincome or your ve-digit self-select PIN usedlast year to e-le. If youre claiming the First-time Homebuyer or Adoption Credit, the IRSrequires you to mail certain documentation

If I knew better, I would do better.A few years ago, a patient said this to me, If I knew better, I would do better. This probable does reflect

the situation of many people. Our general health education comes from our parents, health class in school,our friends, our health care providers, television, and the internet. Too many times, I see patients who neverthink about their health until something crops up that causes them to seek health care. My father used tosay, If it aint broke, dont fix it. In one sense that is a good attitude. It is not necessary to run to the doctor

with every hang nail and sniffle. However, preventive care is a very important part of our overall picture ofhealth.

We all basically know what to do, but some times we need a reminder.

Moderation is a key element of life. Many people do things to excess. Begin to develop some commonsense. Reduce portions. Drink one or two cups of coffee a day, instead of 20. Drink water instead of pop.Every 20 ounce pop has 10 or more teaspoons of sugar (as high fructose corn syrup) in it. If you have oneless pop and one more bottle of water per day you would save yourself 3600 teaspoons of sugar in one year.

Just that, would remove 10 or 15 pounds per year, instead of gaining it. Get some healthy fats in your diet.For too many years we were telling people to eat low fat and low cholesterol. So what did they eat instead,more carbohydrates and sugars. We need fats to make hormones and nerve cells. Fish oil, flaxseed oil, and

olive oil are highly beneficial. Be careful not to over heat oils (deep frying) since this will convert them totrans fats which are very inflammatory to our blood vessels. Limit dairy; for some it is very inflammatory.

Again moderation is the key. Alcohol in small amounts has some benefit. Frequent,regular use will eventually cause great health problems which are nearly impossible tofix. The heat and chemicals from smoking does great damage to our lungs. Most of ushave an amazing resilience. Many people smoke 40-50 pack-years (one pack per day

for one year is a pack-year) and still do not have much trouble. Others cannot handlethat much smoking because they have a genetically weak system. All of us have stressin our lives. Sometime we get over loaded. That is when systems begin to break down.Learning to relax, using some Mind Coaching can be highly beneficial.

So pay attention to your body. Learn about your body, attend some classes, prepareyourself, and you will do better.
