Green Structures; an SME CleanTech incubator
We work within the Built Environment area covering:
• Design of Energy Saving Products & Systems (Ventive, the Passive Heat Recovery Ventilation)
• Development of Energy Efficient Technologies (Thermal Accumulator, Passive Cooling)
• Sustainable Architecture (Passive Space, Passive Loft, Zero Carbon Dwellings)
• Modelling & Prototyping of Modern Built Environment Innovations (Low Energy Heating & Cooling, “RoboSquirt”)
• Design of New Construction Methodologies (Passive Adaptive Building, Thermal Memory House)
How does it work?
• We identify a distinct need for a new solution
• We work out an ideal future scenario, what would users, installers and others want from it?
• We work out the market size for the innovation (e.g. Ventive - £400M per annum for new build and £2BN for retrofit markets from 2013)
• We back engineer from the ideal end product identifying development steps
• We apply for and secure appropriate part funding
• We conceptualise, design, prototype, simulate and test the end product
How does it work?
• We apply for a number of patents covering the technology
• We identify development/commercialisation partners & collaborate
• We set up spinouts in order to bring products to market & seek investment

Collaborative R&D (KTA)
Innovation Awards for Collaborative R&D
The University of Sheffield has launched `Building for the Future´ program with 10 Innovation Awards made available to initiate Collaborative R&D projects and give SMEs access to cutting edge research expertise and facilities.
Projects are business-led and aim to develop innovative products, processes or technology in the area of `Building for the Future´.
Green Structures won 2 Collaborative R&D Innovation Awards: Thermal Accumulator & On-demand Solar CHP
Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is the temporary storage of high or low temperature energy for later use.
Some say that Energy Storage Market is to hit $500BN by 2030
Sounds familiar?
“Incubator is a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship providing office and laboratory space early-stage businesses who can take advantage of being in close proximity to eminent scientists and experts in technology.” Or not? Out of the largest top 10 companies set up in the last decade, which one is the University spinout? How about the top 50?
GS & Collaborative Joint Ventures
Incubators redefined, University spin-ins as opposed to University spin-outs?
Robotics 4 Retrofitting is a CleanTech start-up resulting from partnership between Imperial College London, Imperial Innovations & Green Structures.
