HTV News & BuzzSummer Camps Senior Parent Letter
Attention: Parents/Guardians of Seniors As the end of the school year fast approaches, we would like to take a moment to remind you to please keep their focus on school positive and support their efforts in finishing the year strong. Unfortunately, incidents take place in our surrounding area pertaining to pranks, social media distractions, and other situations that could threaten the success of your student as well as their participation in our end-of-the-year events, including the senior picnic, prom, and graduation. While we anticipate a great ending with our wonderful senior class, we send this as an effort to promote awareness and to keep our school safe. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns as we near the end of the year. Thank you for your help and support. Sincerely, Hersey Administrative Team
Fall Sports Info Parent Night
On Wednesday, February 22nd Student Services held its second Parent Night of the year in the JHHS Cafeteria. Hersey hosted Jennifer McAdams, the Clinical Site Manager for the Northbrook location of ERC Insight Behavioral Health Centers. The presentation was titled, "Depression & the Adolescent Brain: Signs, Symptoms, and Supports." Presentation topics included adolescent brain development and how it impacts behaviors, differentiating symptoms of depression from typical adolescent behaviors, and how parents can support their students with managing symptoms. Approximately 85 parents from across the district attended the presentation!
The third and final Student Services Parent Night will take place in the JHHS cafeteria from 7:00pm-9:00pm on Wednesday, May 3rd. Hersey will be hosting Lizzy Appleby, the Youth Program Manager from Angles. Her presentation is called "Adult Allies: Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth." This presentation is designed for parents, teachers, therapists, and other adults who want to support youth. The program will provide an overview of gender and sexual identity, as well as the specific challenges experienced by young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), or those who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. This workshop will also provide information about youth identity development, different sexual and gender identities, the negative effects of discrimination, as well as opportunities to practice strategies to support LGBTQ+ young people. Hope to see you there!

ARC Tech TECH TUESDAY IN THE ARC
The second Tuesday of the month, in collaboration with the librarian, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library teen and tech staff come bearing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) projects for the students to experiment with during their lunch periods. Mini projects include using circuitry with the Makey Makey kit. By using wires and a switchboard, attached to a computer, they’re able to forego the keyboard and use only their circuits to play Pac-Man, Snake, or play a digital piano. Osmo and Sphero are both popular as well. With a Sphero, you connect a BB-8-esque robot to a tablet and let it race down the hallway, or jump on the mini ramps. Osmo tests your brain with Tangrams or trying to figure out a word before an opponent with only one clue. The Oculus Virtual Reality is a new addition as of January! With a fully immersive headset, headphones, and hand controls (Oculus Touch) students are transported to another world. They’re able to look around 360 degrees and perform “tasks”. With the ever-changing technology, we’ll continue to offer new experiences and opportunities for students to widen their technological literacy.

School Pesticide Application Notification Program In 1999 the Illinois General Assembly passed laws requiring that public schools notify parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours prior to any pesticide applications on school property. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobial agents (such as disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits, and rodenticide baits.
