In August of 2018, heavy rains and storms caused the temporary closure of Wildcat Mountain State Park and closures of segments along the Elroy-Sparta, 400 and Hillsboro State Trails. The Department of Natural Resources has been working diligently to reopen the park and trails. Wildcat Mountain State Park and the Hillsboro State Trail are completely repaired and open to the public. Major repairs still remain on sections of the Elroy-Sparta and 400 State Trails with the sections to re-open in 2020.
