Over the next two weeks we are going to be writing our own narrative inspired by

Stone Age Boy.

Lesson 1

WALT: To act out feelings in a given setting to create an atmosphere

WINS: To recall the ideas of setting. Describe mood and atmosphere verballyTo read with feeling and dramatic effect to evoke an atmosphere.

Today, we’re going to start by looking at the setting of the

story.

What do we mean by the setting of a

story?

The setting describes where and when the story takes place.

It helps build background and create images in the mind.

It helps set the tone or mood of the story.

Details to describe in the setting:

Time of dayTime of yearTime in historySceneryWeather Location

Setting

In Stone Age boy there are two settings. What are those two settings?

Imagine you are the boy in our story, can you describe them?

In the beginning, I wondered though a pleasant spring wood. The sun, sprinkled through the fresh, infant leaves.

In the breeze, the gentle rustling of leaves singing a soothing melody hide the hum of the near by city. All of a sudden, I stumbled on a root that penetrated out of the

earthy ground.

I found myself in a heavenly, green place. I could not hear distant murmur from traffic, just the sweet choir of birds. The people I met did not live in a house with walls and a roof; smartly designed and constructed by experts in suits. They sheltered in damp, murky caves. They had none of the home comforts we are accustom to and they certainly didn’t wear suits, all that covered

their modesty was a small piece of rabbit skin! I felt quite over dressed!

Let’s act!

For todays work, act out being the boy (you can change it to a girl). Create two settings of your own.

The first setting will be our current time.

The second setting will be one of your choosing. You could have a different time in history; like the Stone Age, you could have a

mystical setting, a sci-fi setting, a spooky setting etc.

Lesson 2

WALT: To plan the characters and a setting for my own story.WINS:To know who the main character of my story isTo know where my story is setTo add an atmosphere to my setting

Today we are going to investigate the atmosphere of the

settings we are building.

Think of your setting; what do we

see, hear, smell and how do we feel?

Discuss these atmospheres. Cut them out and sort them into

positive atmospheres and negative atmospheres.

With the two words you have chosen to describe the

atmosphere of your two settings, use a dictionary to find their meanings.

Press here to get onto a dictionary online!

Now explain why you have chosen this word to describe your

atmosphere.

For example:

I have chosen worrying to describe the setting when the boy is taken into

another world because he doesn’t know where he is, how to get home or if it’s

safe!

Lesson 3

WALT: To plan the characters and a setting for my own story.WINS:To know who the main character of my story isTo know where my story is setTo add an atmosphere to my setting

What are the main parts of the Stone Age Boy?

What happens in the beginning, middle and end?

Here is a story map to show the story of the Stone Age Boy….

The boy is wondering through the forest. In the distance, he can hear the faint hum from the chaotic road.

Suddenly, he fell and found himself in a completely new world. He met a girl call Om.

Om showed the boy where she lived and how they lived.

One day, Om took the boy to a cave. There were amazing drawings all over the walls!

Without warning, a ferocious, monstrous bear came out of nowhere and the boy fell back into endless tunnel.

Unexpectedly, the boy found himself back in his home and Om had gone. When he arrived back home, he discovered that no time had passed.

The young girl wondered cautiouslythrough the rural village. The townwas silent, there was not a sole in sight! The town was fully of worry.

Suddenly, she fell and found herself in a completely new world. She met a dragon with pearly, white feathers that were as soft as clouds. This world was the most tranquil place she had been!

The dragon became her friend and showed her around the peacefulkingdom.

Now, use the settings you have created over the last two days and put them in the first half of your story map. Here is mine!

Make sure you use the atmospheres you chose

yesterday!

Add a sentence or two to explain what is happening. Include key descriptions

you would like to use.

Lesson 4

WALT: To plan a dilemma for a storyWINS:To know what a dilemma isTo use the plan I have startedTo create a dilemma using the character and setting I have created.

What is a dilemma?

Where does it come in a story?

A dilemma is a problem that happens in the middle of a story. It happens to characters

that were introduced to use at the beginning of the story.

In Stone Age Boy, the dilemma happens when suddenly the children encounter the ferocious, monstrous bear.

What could the dilemma be in your story?

The dilemma is a problem.

Mind map some ideas for your own dilemma.

Dilemma

Dilemma

Let’s share some ideas!

An important decision needs to be made.

Someone has just reached an important goal

An important secret is uncovered.

Something very important is found.

Someone is in danger and needs help.

Someone is hurt or scared.

One day, _______________________________________________________________________________

Without warning, ________________________________________________________________________

Unexpectedly, _________________ _____________________________

Today think of your own build up and dilemma. Add them to the story map you

have started.

Build up Dilemma

One day, the peace loving dragon took her deep into the enchanted forest.

Without warning, a fierce goblin jumped out of nowhere and captured the dragon. Quickly, I hid up high in a tree.

The problem that my characters face.

Add a sentence or two to explain what is happening. Include key descriptions

you would like to use.

Let’s see how our

story maps are looking so far….

Lesson 5

WALT: To plan a resolution for a storyWINS:To know what a resolution isTo use the plan I have startedTo draw pictures to sequence my whole story

What could the resolution to your story?

Finally, we need to resolve the dilemma.

Mind map some ideas of how to solve your problem.

Resolution of the problem

One day, the peace loving dragon took her deep into the enchanted forest.

Without warning, a fierce goblin jumped out of nowhere and captured the dragon. Quickly, I hid up high in a tree.

Unexpectedly, _________________ _____________________________

Add a sentence your resolution to your final box.

Finally, illustrate your story map to show the sequence of events.
