Today, we’re going to start by looking at the setting of the

story.

What do we mean by the setting of a

story?

Page 5: Over the next two weeks we are going to be writing our own … · 2020-04-30 · nowhere and the boy fell back into endless tunnel. Unexpectedly, the boy found himself back in his

The setting describes where and when the story takes place.

It helps build background and create images in the mind.

It helps set the tone or mood of the story.

In Stone Age boy there are two settings. What are those two settings?

Imagine you are the boy in our story, can you describe them?

Page 7: Over the next two weeks we are going to be writing our own … · 2020-04-30 · nowhere and the boy fell back into endless tunnel. Unexpectedly, the boy found himself back in his

In the beginning, I wondered though a pleasant spring wood. The sun, sprinkled through the fresh, infant leaves.

In the breeze, the gentle rustling of leaves singing a soothing melody hide the hum of the near by city. All of a sudden, I stumbled on a root that penetrated out of the

earthy ground.

I found myself in a heavenly, green place. I could not hear distant murmur from traffic, just the sweet choir of birds. The people I met did not live in a house with walls and a roof; smartly designed and constructed by experts in suits. They sheltered in damp, murky caves. They had none of the home comforts we are accustom to and they certainly didn’t wear suits, all that covered

their modesty was a small piece of rabbit skin! I felt quite over dressed!

Let’s act!

For todays work, act out being the boy (you can change it to a girl). Create two settings of your own.

The first setting will be our current time.

The second setting will be one of your choosing. You could have a different time in history; like the Stone Age, you could have a

mystical setting, a sci-fi setting, a spooky setting etc.

Page 9: Over the next two weeks we are going to be writing our own … · 2020-04-30 · nowhere and the boy fell back into endless tunnel. Unexpectedly, the boy found himself back in his

Today we are going to investigate the atmosphere of the

settings we are building.

Think of your setting; what do we

see, hear, smell and how do we feel?

Page 12: Over the next two weeks we are going to be writing our own … · 2020-04-30 · nowhere and the boy fell back into endless tunnel. Unexpectedly, the boy found himself back in his

Discuss these atmospheres. Cut them out and sort them into

positive atmospheres and negative atmospheres.

Now explain why you have chosen this word to describe your

atmosphere.

For example:

I have chosen worrying to describe the setting when the boy is taken into

another world because he doesn’t know where he is, how to get home or if it’s

safe!

The boy is wondering through the forest. In the distance, he can hear the faint hum from the chaotic road.

Suddenly, he fell and found himself in a completely new world. He met a girl call Om.

Om showed the boy where she lived and how they lived.

One day, Om took the boy to a cave. There were amazing drawings all over the walls!

Without warning, a ferocious, monstrous bear came out of nowhere and the boy fell back into endless tunnel.

Unexpectedly, the boy found himself back in his home and Om had gone. When he arrived back home, he discovered that no time had passed.

Where does it come in a story?

A dilemma is a problem that happens in the middle of a story. It happens to characters
