“ONE NEAT DAD” Years ago, Dr. Charlie Shedd held a contest called, “One Neat Dad.” He asked contestants to send in letters recommending their dad for this great honor. Here is a list of the ten most appreciated qualities for a great father:
1. He takes time for me. 2. He listens to me. 3. He plays with me. 4. He invites me to go places with him. 5. He lets me help him. 6. He treats my mother well. 7. He lets me say what I think. 8. He is nice to my friends. 9. He only punishes me when I deserve it. 10. He is not afraid to admit when he is wrong.
You will notice that qualities 1-5 all involve time. Time spent with a youngster
seems to be the single most appreciated trait of a great dad. Qualities 6-10 involve simple kindness and consideration for the feelings of others.
Steven Clark Goad penned these words on parenting which might help us establish some priorities as parents:
I had a dog once. I often sat down beside my dog, petted it, trained it to fetch a
stick, and even took it hunting with me. I loved that dog. I had a car once. It was a good car. I took care of it, kept it full of gas and oil. It
took me lots of places. I loved that car. I had a set of golf clubs once. We spent many happy hours together. I always
took care of them, cleaning and scrubbing them after every round. I loved those clubs. I had a child once. Very seldom did I sit down beside him to talk and play. I did
not take him hunting or fishing. I really was not interested in keeping him full of the right spiritual food. I seldom asked him how his day went – I was too busy griping about my day.
My dog died; my car wore out; my golf clubs broke. This did not bother me much, for they were replaceable. But I also lost my child. I could not replace him. I lost my only chance to bring him up in the Lord. --copied
