History

Orchard Mount is steeped in history. It lies on the route of the main Roman road

between the forts at Manchester and Wigan, which were built in the late first

century AD. A section of this road was unearthed in Ellesmere Park during an

excavation by local group.

The hamlet of Chorlton Fold was probably part of a monastic grange, or farming

estate, by the end of the thirteenth century. This belonged to the Cistercian

monks of Whalley Abbey in the Ribble Valley. Archaeological excavations have

found sections of a boundary ditch, cut into the sandstone bedrock. Fragments

of pottery from this ditch suggest that it was of medieval date. A large quantity

of metal slag was also discovered, providing evidence for medieval iron-

working.

Settlement at Chorlton Fold in the seventeenth century is testified by the

excavation of a well, a probable livestock enclosure, rubbish pits and

fragmentary lengths of stone walls. Stone farm sheds had certainly been built at

Chortlon Fold and Orchard Mount by the end of the eighteenth century.

Chorlton Fold was a good example of a ‘foldyard’, with a farmhouse, barns and

outbuildings arranged around a central yard in which cattle were normally kept.

These buildings, with other scattered farmsteads, formed the agricultural

landscape surrounding Eccles before the massive urban expansion of the late

nineteenth century.

Monton has a real sense of family and community and is represented by the

Monton Village Community Association, originally named the Monton Traders'

Association, it was renamed to include both residents and traders.

The association has a gardening group that maintains the flowerbeds and

greens on a voluntary basis, it also organises an annual themed festival on the

first Saturday of July each year. Living Quarter will be able to provide any further

There is also a free timed 5k run every Saturday, many organised clubs such a

cubs, brownies and dance classes for the children to get involved in. Monton

Football club has teams ranging from 4 years to adults and welcome all new

pharmacy, hairdressers, deli’s, newsagent, supermarket and various clothes

Healthcare facilities are abundant with a large health centre, doctors surgeries

Transport

The village of Monton is served by rail services passing through the railway

stations at Patricroft and at Eccles, along the Manchester Victoria-Liverpool

Lime Street railway line which is about a 10 minute walk from Orchard Mount.

Bus services also serve the village, while the nearest Metrolink station is in

Eccles (approximately 15 minute walk). There are excellent motorway links into

Manchester City Centre, Media City and The Trafford Centre.

Monton has walkways running down the Bridgewater canal popular with dog

walkers and joggers, parks and green spaces with easy access to both

Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs, all the shops and

theatres that Manchester City Centre and The Lowry Centre have to offer.
