 OLD  TESTAMENT  SURVEY  SESSION  1:  INTRODUCTION                                                                                                                                            IN  THIS  SESSION  This  Session  will  discuss  the  nature  and  importance  of  the  Bible  in  preparation  for  study  of  the  Old  Testament.    In  doing  so,  we  will  focus  our  conversation  on  the  trustworthiness  and  authority  of  the  Bible  for  human  life.    KEY  PASSAGES  

• John  1:1-­‐3  1  In  the  beginning  was  the  Word,  and  the  Word  was  with  God,  and  the  Word  was  God.    2  He  was  in  the  beginning  with  God.    3  All  things  were  made  through  him,  and  without  him  was  not  any  thing  made  that  was  made.    4  In  him  was  life,  and  the  life  was  the  light  of  men.    5  The  light  shines  in  the  darkness,  and  the  darkness  has  not  overcome  it.  

• John  8:12  12  Again  Jesus  spoke  to  them,  saying,  “I  am  the  light  of  the  world.    Whoever  follows  me  will  not  walk  in  darkness,  but  will  have  the  light  of  life.”  

• 2  Timothy  3:14-­‐17  14  But  as  for  you,  continue  in  what  you  have  learned  and  have  firmly  believed,  knowing  from  whom  you  learned  it  15  and  how  from  childhood  you  have  been  acquainted  with  the  sacred  writings,  which  are  able  to  make  you  wise  for  salvation  through  faith  in  Christ  Jesus.    16  All  Scripture  is  breathed  out  by  God  and  profitable  for  teaching,  for  reproof,  for  correction,  and  for  training  in  righteousness,  17  that  the  man  of  God  may  be  complete,  equipped  for  every  good  work.  

 DISCUSS  

• Think  about  your  closest  relationship  in  life.    What  do  you  do  in  and  with  these  relationships?    Why  do  you  do  these  things?    What  would  happen  if  you  didn’t  make  these  mistakes?    How  does  your  own  experience  confirm  the  importance  of  what  the  Session  called  the  disciplines  of  relationship  (i.e.  things  we  do  that  equip  us  to  interact  with  others  in  a  healthy  way)?  

• As  you  think  about  how  the  Bible  presents  God  as  a  relational  God,  why  would  it  be  important  to  view  the  entire  Bible  (both  Old  and  New  Testaments)  as  something  that’s  trustworthy?  (Is  there  a  difference  between  the  Bible  and  Oprah?    Why?)  

• In  light  of  this  Session,  how  do  you  believe  the  Bible  should  affect  our  lives?    More  specifically,  how  should  it  impact  way  we  interact  with  people  with  which  we  have  solid  relationships?  

   PRAY  

• Pray  that  God  would  begin  to  prepare  your  heart  as  you  embark  on  this  study  of  the  Old  Testament  as  it  unfolds  in  future  Sessions.    Ask  the  Spirit  to  ignite  in  your  heart  a  desire  to  hear  the  words  of  God  through  your  reading  of  Scripture  and  interact  with  it  in  a  way  that  shows  you  access  to  his  heart  for  you  humanity  and  for  you.
