"Kiki" Camarena Jr. opened upthe West Covina's 20th RedRibbon Rally held at WestCovina High School October 23.Camarena's father is honoredwith Red Ribbon Week and Ral-lies, and to help with the fighton drugs. Camarena Jr. camefrom San Diego to open thisevent. He talked about his dadand what had happened. "Hewanted to make a difference...to help other people".

With the combined efforts ofthe City of West Covina's Po-lice and Fire Departments, alongwith the West Covina UnifiedSchool District, West CovinaRotary Clubs, West Covina Elk'sLodge and a host of other or-ganizations, they treated thecommunity to a free pancakebreakfast.

The Red Ribbon Rally had anumber of demonstrations bythe first responders with theSWAT Team in action, the K-9Unit doing its job and the firedepartment using the Jaws of

Life to remove a victim from awrecked car. A police helicop-ter was also on scene with theMounted Police Units on hand.

The program focused onawareness and the dangers ofdrug abuse. Information wasmade available to everyone whoattended.

Thousands of pancakes wereserved and cooked on the fa-mous Elk's rotating grill. Greatentertainment was provided byFuture America.

In honor of Camarena'smemory and his battle againstillegal drugs, friends and neigh-bors began to wear red badgesof satin after his murder. Par-

ents, sick of the destruction ofalcohol and other drugs, hadbegun forming coalitions. Someof these new coalitions tookCamarena as their model andembraced his belief that oneperson can make a difference.These coalitions also adoptedthe symbol of Camarena'smemory, the red ribbon.

The National Family Partner-ship organized the first Nation-

wide Red Ribbon Campaign in1988. Since that time, the cam-paign has reached millions ofchildren.

This was a great educationaland entertaining event for ev-eryone.

Santa Anita Race Track was thebackdrop for Volvo's ExclusiveTest Drive of the "Naughty"S60 event. Although it was ahazy day on the morning of Sat-urday October 23rd, the SanGabriel mountains, covered bya light mist, was breathtaking.

Volvo was showing off theirnew S60 to the media and oth-ers, who were given a chanceto drive the sleek new beautyaround the parking lot on twoconed courses, one for the risktaker and the other for the faintof heart! Either way the driv-ers lined up to either drive ontheir own or be driven. Youwould have expected a lot ofnoise from the cars, but unlikeracing cars, this Volvo is ex-tremely quiet. I was leaning ona Volvo, which suddenly tookoff without a hum. I did notrealize there was anybody in thecar.

DUARTE - Last week 20year-old Duarte Youth BoxingClub member Luis Sedano com-peted in a boxing match inTulare, CA. But next week, heand team mate 16 year-oldJacobe Velasco will be on theisland of Tahiti, not only repre-senting the City of Duarte butthe USA in an international box-ing match.

The Duarte Youth BoxingClub has opened doors to traveland experiences that many ofits young men and women neverdreamed of. Along the way,these young amateur boxers arelearning what it takes to be awinner in life: hard work, dis-cipline, dedication.

Head coach, VictorValenzuela said the invitation forSedano and Velasco to travel toTahiti and participate in the in-ternational match as membersof the USA team came throughthe USA Boxing Federation. TheTahiti Boxing Federation will payall expenses for the trip Oct 23through Oct. 31 that will in-clude side tours to the islands

There are currently about 50youths 8 to 20 years old in theDuarte Parks and Recreation'sDuarte Youth Boxing Club thatoperates out of the Duarte TeenCenter. Most recently six of theyoung boxers competed in theManuel Torres InternationalTournament in Tulare. All sixwon their tournament matches.

AZUSA - Students at Hodge Elementary celebrated their academic achievement success of reaching 819 on the State’s AcademicPerformance Index with a special assembly. Principal Christiane Ayoub-Garcia kept her part of the bargain by allowing students to dyeher hair pink. She thanked the staff and students for working hard to reach their goal. In addition, students were treated to a magicshow by Taylor Hughes.

The Honorable Assistant Sec-retary of State Robert O. BlakeJr., Secretary of State HillaryClinton's Assistant for takingcare of South and Central AsianAffairs, a highly respected, thirdgeneration, career diplomat,was the 27th individual to lec-ture at this Annual event thatstarted 27 years ago with a lec-ture by Jonas Salk, the famousAmerican Medical Researcherwho discovered the polio vac-cine.

In his lecture, Robert Blakerepeatedly detailed the strongeconomic ties that bound therespective regions, specificallyin the fields of aerospace, mili-tary, biotech and communica-tions.

The next day, an informalbreakfast was held at the homeof Dina and John Johns in LaJolla, and Robert Blake was theGuest of Honor. The Mr. Blakepaid special tribute to a groupof San Diegans who, he said,exemplified the best of theAmerican spirit of entrepreneur-ship and generosity. Thesewere the San Diegans who hadjoined John and Dina to con-struct a community center thathouses a school and medicalclinic after the devastating tsu-nami hit Sri Lanka. "What I amso proud of, said Blake, "is thefact that this model project wascompleted without one dollarfrom the U. S. Government. Itsays everything about who weare as a people."

days in a row. It was Thurs-day the 21st of October at twop.m. when two young ladiesin a SUV, pulled out of theVons Shopping Center by theStarbucks exit, possibly tomake a left turn on Grand Av-enue, when a black BMWplowed into the left side of theSUV. One of the ladies in thevehicle bumped her head andwas taken by ambulance toFoothill PresbyterianHospital's Emergency De-partment. The passenger didnot seem to be hurt and nei-ther was the driver in theBMW. The ambulance, FireDepartment and Police wereat the scene in what seemedto be minutes. An employeefrom the City of Glendora ar-rived to see what could bedone about the lightpost be-longing to Southern CaliforniaEdison, whic fell down, alongwith the the attached flags, ofGlendorans fighting in Iraqand Afghanistan.

Did the rain cause this ac-cident? possibly! It is impor-tant for drivers to be extracareful when it is raining. Atleast, please do stick to thetraffic laws, paying extra cau-tion when making turns ontopublic thoroughfare. Theroads are slick with oil andwater. Visibilty is limited.Could this accident have beenavoided? Yes!
