Class: 2nd Class Week beginning: 11th May 2020
Note from teacher:
Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the lovely weather. You are all working very
hard. I really enjoyed looking at the boats you made last week. They were all cleverly made so well done!
This week, I will be asking you to email me one - two pieces of work each day – these activities will be
marked ‘yes’ in the submission box. Also, feel free to email me any other pieces of work that you are
working on at home or that you feel you have worked extra hard on, I am always delighted to view your
work, and send you some feedback on it.
If you need to use your parent/ guardians email to send on work that is perfectly fine. In order to
submit a picture/ sound clip or document to me please ensure that you put your name, date and title
of the task in the subject of the email to me so that I know who it is and what is being submitted. I will
check my emails every day but is your responsibility to email these to me each day or as soon as you can!
I am available from 9.10-2.50pm and will try to respond to you all.
Thanks,
Ms. Kennedy rebecca@smltullow.ie
Ms. O’ Reilly sarah@smltullow.ie
If there is a subject that you do not participate in e.g. Religion please spend extra time on the Maths games and
English activities provided.

The Sahara Desert
Focus words: rarely adapted harsh environment
absorb scarce oasis nomads
The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world. It is in the north of Africa. During the
day, it is extremely hot, but when the sun sets it turns bitterly cold. It rarely rains in the Sahara,
and some parts of the desert can go for years without any rainfall.
It might seem impossible for anything to live in this hot, dry place. However, the Sahara is home to plants, animals,
birds, insects and people. Creatures, including foxes, antelopes, snakes, wild dogs, scorpions and spiders have all
adapted to living in this harsh environment.
Desert animals have to survive on very little water. Lizards and scorpions get water
from the food they eat. Plants such as the cactus store water in their roots, stems
and leaves.
Desert animals have found ways to beat the heat. Nocturnal animals sleep in burrows
during the day and creep out to hunt in the evening when it’s cooler. Many animals
have light-coloured fur or scales. The pale colours absorb less heat.
Camels also live in the desert. The humps on their back are full of fat, which gives the camel energy when food is
scarce. The camel has two rows of eyelashes to stop sand getting into its eyes. It has wide feet to stop it sinking
in the sand.
The Sahara Desert is not just miles and miles of sand dunes. There are patches of land with pools of water where
palm trees and plants grow. A little patch like this is called an oasis.
Nomads live in deserts. Nomads are people who move from place to place on camels. They live in tents and travel
around in search of food and water.
