Welcome back to Term 3. I trust you all had a safe and happy holiday break, and that your children enjoyed the change of pace a
holiday brings.
My name is Mrs Nicole King and I have been appointed as the Principal of Marshall Road State School until the end of the year.
It has been such a pleasure getting to know the students, parents and school staff that make up this lovely school. As I visited
classrooms this week, I was impressed by how settled the students were as they reconnected with their friends, their teachers and
support staff.
We are so grateful to the region, school staff and the P&C who have worked in a variety of ways to facilitate the renovation of the
bitumen areas between the admin block and B and C blocks. Thank you also to those who gave up time on the weekend to create the
highly functional and accessible garden areas near Kidszone. These renovations have provided exciting new play spaces and it has
been wonderful to see the students explore these spaces and spread their play into the nooks created by the freeform garden beds
between A block and B block. I was even convinced to play elastics with a group of girls! We expect that the area between B and C
block will be open this week.
At the staff and teacher aide meeting last week, I shared a bit about my history, my values and what inspires me. If you would like to
know a little bit more about me, please come along to the next P&C meeting. I look forward to meeting you all during the course of
the year; whether it be a quick chat, a wave and smile at pick up time, at a P&C meeting or any of the exciting events coming up.
Have a wonderful week.

OUTDOOR LEARNING AREA DEVELOPMENT
We have had so much wonderful feedback from our community about the new outdoor learning areas between A, B and C
Blocks. The buzz last week was amazing and I can see that students are so keen to have all the space available to them. There
has been a slight delay on opening the area between B and C due to a delay in the fence panels yet to be installed. We anticipate
that these will be completed this week. The garden beds will be the other ongoing project with the gardens to be planted over
the coming weeks.
Beautiful grounds, lunchtime art… and have I snapped our Principal doing elastics???
COMMUNITY COFFEE COLLECTIVE
The coffee and chat is on again this term at the concrete Pad at the southern end of B Block. This is a great place to informally
chat with teacher aides, teachers and the leadership team before school.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our Inter House Cross Country will be held on Friday morning 3 August, week 3. Students will be able to wear their house
shirt and may wear non-uniform running shoes. Students will be practising the cross country course over the next few weeks in
PE lessons, with their class teachers. From this week students will have an opportunity to run the course each morning
between 8:30 and 8:45 on the oval before school.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Parent teacher interviews will occur this week in the PAC from 3:10 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Each interview
will run for 15 minutes. There will be chairs for parents to wait outside the hall and parents will be invited in after the bell
sounds at the change over time. Entry and exit to the interviews will be via the side of the hall overlooking the oval.

ZONES OF REGULATION PARENT SESSION
Are you looking for more support to teach self-regulation with your child? Are you wanting to know more about the Zones that
are used at MRSS? We will be holding a free Zones of Regulation parent session in week three. The Zones is a program that
we use at MRSS in our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) lessons to teach students how to identify their emotions, and use
strategies to self-regulate and solve problems. Elena Nicolaou will be presenting the session to be held in the Resource Centre
at 6:00 pm on Tuesday evening 31 July.
Book a seat online on SOBS.
WHAT ARE THE ZONES OF REGULATION?
The Zones is a cognitive behaviour approach used to explicitly teach self-regulation by categorising all the different ways we
feel into four distinct zones. The Zones curriculum provides strategies to teach students awareness of their feelings and
impulses, manage their sensory needs, improve their ability to problem solve conflicts and increase independence in being able
to self-manage their emotions.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA FOR STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY
Marshall Road State School will be undertaking the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data for Students with a Disability over
the next two weeks. More information regarding this is attached to the newsletter.
All Education Ministers from Commonwealth, state and territory governments endorsed the implementation of a Nationally
Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) in all Australian schools (government, independent
and Catholic).
The nationally consistent approach to data collection provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community
with a clear picture of the number of students receiving adjustments because of disability in schools, and the adjustments they
are provided to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students.\
CODING IN CLASS
OzoBots are proving to be a big hit in our classes. Great to see the coding equipment purchased by our P and C out and about
in classrooms. 6H in the last week of Term 2.

ARTS FESTIVAL 2018
The Arts will be celebrated at Marshall Road State School throughout Term 3. Our Arts Festival culmination week will be
celebrated during week 9 of Term 3, starting Monday 10 September, with the culmination night and barbeque on Wednesday
12 September.
This will be a wonderful opportunity for the students to display and celebrate their visual and performing arts talents and to be
immersed in a range of arts events.
News of events and competitions will be communicated through the newsletter and on posters displayed around the school over
the coming weeks.
VISUAL ARTS COMPETITIONS
Students are invited to enter the Visual Arts competitions. There are 3 categories: Painting & Drawing, Printmaking and
Sculpture. Art creations are to be completed at home and delivered to the Resource Centre (library) in week 7 on Wednesday
29 August between 8:00am and 8:45am. After judging, they will be on display for public viewing on the culminating evening.
Criteria sheets describing the requirements for the various visual arts competitions are attached to this newsletter and available
from Mrs Nicolaides in the art room.
“MARSHALL ROAD’S GOT TALENT” PERFORMING ARTS COMPETITIONS
Students are invited to enter the Performing Arts competitions. This can be in the form of a drama, dance or musical (vocal
or instrumental) performance. The students can enter in a solo, duet or group act. The divisions are Junior, Prep to Year 2, and
Senior, Year 3 to Year 6. Nominations forms are attached to this newsletter or available from Mrs Nicolaides in the art room.
Nomination forms are due week 4 Monday 6 August and then the talent show competitions will be held at lunchtimes in the
PAC during weeks 5, 6 & 7. A timetable of performance times will be communicated closer to this event.
DANCE FEVER
Dance Fever lessons commence on the first Monday of Term 3 and continue throughout the term. The program runs for
10 weeks, with the students attending a 30 minute lesson per week in our Performing Arts Centre. Parents will be invited in
week 9 to view a lesson.
We are all excited about the Term 3 Arts Festival events. There will be further information in the weekly newsletters.

CURRICULUM CORNER
Science offers the answers to various questions we ask out of curiosity, in our early years. For instance, how does it rain? How
does our body function? This term the students in Year 2 are learning about insects and their habitats. To gain the students
interest one of their lessons this week involved going on field study throughout the school. Their aim was to observe as many
living things as they could in the local environment (near the junior play areas). The students discovered mosquitoes, flies,
ladybugs, lizards, spiders, ants, moths, birds and much more.
Here are some observations from some of the students in year 2.
Olivia discovered a golden orb spider!
Rudy, Jeremy and Xander found a beautiful yellow and black ladybug.
Darcy noticed a jumping spider.
Cameron saw a green lizard.
Erica and Alma even observed some spider eggs.
Once the year 2's found at least 3 animals for the field study they then had to discuss if the animal was found in a natural or a
managed habitat.
Kind regards and happy learning,
Luisa Cavallaro

WORKING BEE FUN
The P&C’s sustainability working group held its first working bee last weekend and we’re amazed by what was achieved in just
a few hours. Thank you to Bunnings Logan Road for its generous donations and to the many parents, carers, teachers, students
and community members who helped out on the day. Check out the revamped vegetable garden near Kidzone, where the MRSS
gardening club is growing tomatoes, herbs, lettuce, broccoli, radishes, eggplants, sweet potatoes and strawberries! Or head down
to admire the beautiful new entrance to the Environmental Learning Area (home of the MRSS chickens), complete with new
plants, mulch and stepping stones/logs. The undercover area of B block is also sparkling thanks to some high pressure cleaning.
Don’t worry if you missed it, there’s another working bee planned for later this term.
