Girl’s Cricket Team Makes State Finals

On Tuesday the Dan-

denong North Girl’s

Kanga Cricket team

were playing in the

Regional Finals at

Greaves Reserve. The

girls won through

from the District fi-

nals and headed

straight to the Re-

gionals.

It was a nervous

group of 9 who head-

ed out on Tuesday, but they had

one thing in mind – they wanted to

win! This would allow them the

opportunity to play on the MCG at

the State Finals.

The girls have been training during

their lunchtimes and have shown

great improvement in their skills.

The first game, the girls played

against Red Hill and they won.

The second game was played

against St Louis and the girls won

convincingly.

It was at this point that the girls

had to wait for other games to fin-

ish in order to find out who they

would be playing as they were un-

defeated and had to play other

teams in the same position.

The next team was Mossgiel Park

who the girls won against.

Onto the semi-finals against Casey

Grammar – again the girls won,

but this time by only 2 runs!!

They were into the Grand Final

and playing against another un-

beaten team - Beaumaris North.

The girls knew that it was their

last chance to make it to the

MCG and they came out win-

ners, beating Beaumaris North

125 to 111 runs!!

The 9 girls who went to the Re-

gional Finals all played their part

in ensuring the success of the

team. It was an impressive side

who came out to win and went

home with the opportunity to

play against other Regional win-

ners at the MCG on December

6th.

A big thank you to Mrs Hilton

for coaching the girls and of

course to Margrett, Juvena,

Krisela, Patience, Hanifa, Rid-

dhi, Maryam, Hasna and

Michelle – a huge congratula-

tions to you all and good luck at

the State Finals!

SWIMMING STARTS THIS MONDAY 2nd DECEMBER

If your child is going swimming, please make sure they have their bath-

ers and towels for this program. Year 2’s need to be at school by 9am

sharp!!

Year 3/4 Visit Mothers Beach

The Year 3 and 4 children have been working

on developing their knowledge of “Sun, Sea and

Safety” this term. All of this work culminated in

an excursion to Mothers Beach on Wednesday,

where children had the opportunity to experi-

ence a beach life style.

Before going on this

adventure, Mr Mac-

kay was asked to

come and speak to the

children about his

beach experiences.

My Mackay is a qual-

ified SCUBA diver

who has also owned

boats and enjoyed

fishing throughout the

years.

With this in mind, Mr

Mackay bought all of

his aqua equipment to

school where he

dressed in his scuba

diving gear and ex-

plained to the chil-

dren what every piece

of equipment was

used for. He re-

lated the equip-

ment to the im-

portance of Math-

ematics and how

a strong

knowledge of this

subject is essen-

tial to be a SCU-

BA diver.

Mr Mackay also

explained in de-

tail what might be

seen under the sea

by the children if

they ever got the

chance to go

SCUBA diving.

The children real-

ly enjoyed listen-

ing to Mr Mackay

talk about all of his underwater experiences and it

gave them greater knowledge of their topic. Mr

Mackay was most impressed by the students excel-

lent questions and their knowledge of various sea

creatures.

On Wednesday, the sun was shining, the weath-

er was hot and it was a fabulous day to visit the

beach. That is exactly what the Year 3/4 chil-

dren did as a conclusion to the theme they have

been studying Sun, Sea, and Safety.

As part of this unit, children have been learning

about the beach as a natural system in our envi-

ronment.

Students

have been

developing

an awareness

of safety is-

sues, an un-

derstanding

of what it

means to be

Sun Smart

and how the

Underwater Adventures with Mr Mackay

erosion process

effects the form

and shape of the

ever changing

coastline.

Mothers Beach

is a fabulous

place to visit to

look at rock erosion along the cliff tops as well

as strolling along the beach, looking for sea life,

building sand castles and walking along the

Mornington pier to view the many fisherman

and boats.

The children had a fabulous time at the beach

and it was a great way to bring to a conclusion

this unit of study.

All of the staff in Years 3 & 4 would like to

thank all who attended this exciting excursion.

It is with great pride that we announce another fab-

ulous educational achievement and that is the

presentation to Miss Elizabeth Thomas for her 40

years of service to education! Miss Thomas began

teaching in 1973 after finishing her teacher training

at Burwood Teacher College.

Her first position was at Essex Heights in Mt Wa-

verley for 9 years, then onto to Canterbury Primary

for 1 year and Dorset Primary school in Croydon

for 16 years.

It was after her time at this school that she arrived

at Dandenong North in 2002.

Eyes, Ears, Hearts and Mind Award

Miss Thomas has taught all year

levels but has spent much of her

career in the Prep-2 area. She is

well known now as the driving

force of our celebrated Reading

Intervention Program.

Miss Thomas was awarded a

certificate and a badge to mark

this milestone. The badge she

will wear proudly as she still has a passion for

teaching children and continues to enjoy her posi-

tion.

Congratulations Miss Thomas!

This Monday’s Assembly, saw four students

from 3C presenting their teacher Mr Chandler

with an Eyes, Ears, Hearts and Mind Award.

This is a special occasion for Mr Chandler as

this is his first year of teaching.

Eyes

If he sees someone working well he encourages

them to keep it up and tries to make it better.

When he sees someone playing nicely when

he’s on yard duty he gives them a ticket to en-

courage them to continue playing nicely.

Ears

Mr Chandler always listens to our problems

and helps us overcome our doubts.

Hearts

Mr Chandler has a heart of gold and always has

the patience to teach us in an easy way.

Mind

Mr Chandler always tries to make us as smart as

he is.

Thank you Mr Chandler you are one of the best

teachers and a funny man.

Miss Thomas - 40 Years Service

SRC Philippines Fundraiser The SRC have worked hard all year raising

funds for a variety of important causes. Howev-

er, The Philippines disaster has been our biggest

donation drive this year.

Over a one week period of collecting Social Ser-

vice, we raised $680! What a wonderful support

form our families to donate this large amount.

As was mentioned, this money is being donated

to a private aide provider in Mr Tony Ross (a

consultant to our school). Mr Ross ensures eve-

ry dollar donates will go directly to assist the

Philippine people. He has already earmarked the

money to be given to a school desperately in need

of some funding as their school has no roof, no

power and there has been terrible flooding of the

buildings. This school called Batasan Island ES, we

are proud to say, will become a sister school for us,

beginning in 2014.

The students will be able to see how the donated

funds are used to improve buildings and education,

as well as creating some “pen pal” links for our

children.

Thank you to everyone for your kindness and gen-

erosity.

This term, 4A have been looking at being safe around water. We visited the beach and a

lot of children are undertaking swimming lessons beginning next Monday. Therefore it

was a great time to discuss water safety and to create some posters with rules to remem-

ber how to keep children safe around water. Here are some of their creative rules:

Student’s Work Page

To prevent your child from

drowning, make sure that

you take them to a pool or a

beach which has on duty

lifeguards.

By Jasmine

Keep babies safe by

going to the children’s

pool.

By Georgia

Always wear a life

jacket if you are on

a boat or a jet ski.

By Vithus

Never leave a boy or

girl under 18 years

of age to supervise a

younger child.

By Ali-Akbar

Take small children

to swim in shallow

water when going to

the pools or put them

in a paddling pool.

By Bhumika

Empty the bath tub

as soon as you finish

having a bath in it.
