THE AIM OF THE STUDY

Analyses the current state of play of national geo-portals development and their compliance with ISO and OGC standards.

METHODOLOGY (1)

Ex post evaluation, based on data collected through web survey at the beginning of 2010.Analysis from the point of view of end-user.No investigation has been made on geo-portal with limited access to unregistered user.

Elżbieta Bielecka, INSPIRE Conference 2010 INSPIRE as a Framework for Cooperation

METHODOLOGY (2)

European geo-portals were analyzed in terms of:visibility of map viewer, the number of language versions of view services, the functionality of view services, availability of network services like WMS, WFS, CSW, and compatibility with the relevant OGC specifications and ISO standards.

RESULTS (1)

30 of 43 European States do have official national geo-portal, with Denmark, Finland, Slovakia and Switzerland have two or more.Spatial data view service is available in 28 States.

CONCLUSIONS

The current geo-portal activities in Europe are mostly driven by the INSPIRE Directive. Each of Member States has started some investments in implementing a national geo-portal.The state of play differs - Some portals haveimplemented a lot of different functions, even much more than is required by INSPIRE.There is a lack of consistency in naming tools and functions.

Elżbieta Bielecka, INSPIRE Conference 2010 INSPIRE as a Framework for Cooperation

CONCLUSIONS

Major difficulties in obtaining information about viewing, discovery and downloading services were:

the language barrier, the discrepancy between information set out in the description of services (including information available in on-line help) and information available directly through the service interface, high dynamic of geo-portals functionality.
