The programme utilises evidenced-basedteaching methods such as workshops designedto encourage student participation andinteraction and has the following global aims:

• Equip students with service user-centredclinical skills in medication management,cognitive behavioural therapy, riskassessment and service userempowerment to facilitate working inpartnership and critical reflection onpractice

• Provide a forum in which students cancritically evaluate their own area ofpractice and formulate change, challengeinequality, promote recovery, respectdiversity and practice ethically and safely

• Provide a forum for students to criticallyevaluate current issues relating to mentalhealth services and practice

• Equip students to develop critical researchor work based learning evaluation andappreciation skills as a basis for evidencebased practic.

• Stimulate critical evaluation of ways toimprove practice and mental healthservice delivery

• Equip students to undertake research andservice reviews in the area of mentalhealth

• Stimulate and foster leadership skills inservice and practice development.

xProgramme ContentxThe majority of modules are completed over12 weeks commencing in September andJanuary each year. There are two exceptionsto this:• Firstly “Methods of Critical Enquiry intothe study of Healthcare Services.” This isa research methods module that runs fromSeptember –May in Year 1

• Secondly the MSc Dissertation modulecomprising the third year of the MSc.Submission is in late September.

The course has been designed to utiliseteaching methods that encourage interactionwith the student and the relevant moduleleaders. Occasionally lectures will be usedbut other methods of teaching deliveryinclude: meeting with personal tutors, groupdiscussions, role play and sessions deliveredby outside speakers. In addition coursematerial is supplied through the internet andemail.

MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTIONSThis multi-disciplinary programme has now been running for 12 years and in that time has undergone anumber of changes to make it more responsive to the contemporary needs of the mental health services.

xAssessmentxThere are varying methods of summative/final assessmentdesigned to demonstrate clinical skills. These include tapedinterviews with service users and carers, essays and serviceplans in which the student will be asked to design, lead andimplement a small service change.

For the Methods of Critical Enquiry into the study ofHealthcare Services the student will devise a researchproposal that is likely to form the basis of their eventual MScdissertation.

Throughout the course formative assessment is used wherethe student is given feedback on their performance in order tohelp improve and shape their summative/final assessment.

xEntry Requirementsx• A minimum of 2 years experience in the mental healthfield if holding a professional qualification in nursing,social work or an allied discipline

• If a non-mental health professional, three years experiencein the mental health field and a good honours degree

• Access to Mental Health Service Users/Carers• Basic IT skills• Access to internet/email
