Stimulate critical evaluation of ways to improve practice and mental health service delivery Equip students to undertake research and service reviews in the area of mental health Stimulate and foster leadership skills in service and practice development. xSpecial Featuresx The first course of its kind in the UK Focuses on enhancing clinical skills Directly related to the Capability Frameworks. xProgramme Contentx The majority of modules are completed over 12 weeks commencing in September and January each year. There are two exceptions to this: Firstly “Methods of Critical Enquiry into the study of Healthcare Services.” This is a research methods module that runs from September –May in Year 1 Secondly the MSc Dissertation module comprising the third year of the MSc. Submission is in late September. The course has been designed to utilise teaching methods that encourage interaction with the student and the relevant module leaders. Occasionally lectures will be used but other methods of teaching delivery include: meeting with personal tutors, group discussions, role play and sessions delivered by outside speakers. In addition course material is supplied through the internet and email. MSc MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTIONS This multi-disciplinary programme has now been running for 12 years and in that time has undergone a number of changes to make it more responsive to the contemporary needs of the mental health services. xAssessmentxThere are varying methods of summative/final assessmentdesigned to demonstrate clinical skills. These include tapedinterviews with service users and carers, essays and serviceplans in which the student will be asked to design, lead andimplement a small service change.

For the Methods of Critical Enquiry into the study ofHealthcare Services the student will devise a researchproposal that is likely to form the basis of their eventual MScdissertation.

Throughout the course formative assessment is used wherethe student is given feedback on their performance in order tohelp improve and shape their summative/final assessment.

xEntry Requirementsx• A minimum of 2 years experience in the mental healthfield if holding a professional qualification in nursing,social work or an allied discipline

• If a non-mental health professional, three years experiencein the mental health field and a good honours degree

• Access to Mental Health Service Users/Carers• Basic IT skills• Access to internet/email
