H.R. Owen CEO Ken Choo’s background
in hospitality has brought a fresh approach
to the running of the top end dealer group
A differentperspective
As dealership events go, the media unveil of H.R. Owen’s
new Ferrari showroom in Mayfair’s Berkeley Square on
a delightful mid-summer London night in July was hard
one to beat.
Ferrari’s latest Monza SP1, a 1954 750 Monza and
a 1962 250 GTO were all on display on the lawn of the Square’s
gardens opposite.
Overseeing events is Ken Choo, H.R. Owen’s chief executive officer.
The Malaysian-born 46-year old has overseen quite a change in the top
end dealer group since taking on the CEO role in January 2017.
Pre-tax profits have leapt from £1.6m in 2015 to £8.3m in 2018. That’s
growth of 419% while only growing 29% in revenue and resulted in a
second-place ranking for the group in Motor Trader’s Top 25 Increased
Profit table, plus a place for Choo himself in MT’s 2019 Top 50 Movers
& Shakers.
H.R. Owen’s central London Ferrari dealership is the first in the world
to sport the Italian brand’s new corporate identity. “Working to get
this showroom up and running has not been easy,” he says, “but we
managed to do it, ahead of every other major city in the world, New
York, Dubai, everywhere else.”
Brought in directly by Vincent Tan, the founder of H.R. Owen’s Berjaya
MT INTERVIEW Ken Choo
Guy Bird
very hands-on. I personally look at the daily transactions, line by line,
so I know exactly what is going on. We have a team to adjust all that
as well. If you buy correctly and sell correctly you should be doing okay.
Basically you need the right people to do it.”
I ask Choo has there been much change in staff since he joined?
“There are almost the same number as before [553 according to
the last MT survey] but we’ve got better people and the
philosophy is very different,” he says. “The leadership is
very different. Now we have a more-flat organisational
structure where staff can access me straight away.
Previously it was more hierarchical. Instead of the used
car director reporting to X, Y or Z before he comes to
me, now he goes straight. So I have direct access.”
Aside from running the efficiency rule over the
business, Choo places great importance on the way
its staff interact with the customers of its dealerships’
various brands too. Across its six London showrooms
and five county locations in Cheltenham (Gloucestershire),
Pangbourne (Berkshire), Byfleet (Surrey), St. Albans
(Hertfordshire) and Stockport (Greater Manchester),
H.R. Owen sells established luxury marques
from Bugatti, Rolls-Royce, Aston
Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Maserati
and Lamborghini, to newer entrants
including UK-based BAC, Croatian
start-up Rimac and Italian EV-only
maker Automobili Pininfarina. These
are all big-name brands with often
equally big-name customers, who
expect a level of service not always
delivered within automotive retailing.
This has been reflected in the type
of new H.R. Owen staff recruited under
Choo’s watch as well. “Most of the
new employees who came in during the
last three years are slanted more towards
hospitality and customer service, there are
less of the ‘hot-sell’ personalities,” he explains.
“We look for people with charisma, who you
meet and feel easy and comfortable with – and
who feel honest. We want to be very honest
with our customers so they trust us.”
So much so it seems, that even a
customer as notoriously feisty as chef
Gordon Ramsay, asked H.R. Owen to spec
his Ferrari for him. So they did.
“This is the level of trust we have with
the customer. I mean, it’s not easy to
read his smile, right? What colour he
wants, what spec he really wants.
You wouldn’t want to screw that
up,” he says.
Whatever the dealer is doing, it seems
to be working as Ramsay helps out with the
group’s catering – his Lucky Cat restaurant
in Grosvenor Square, opened recently just
a few streets away.
On the night of the Mayfair Ferrari event
H.R. Owen gained permission from the
local council to display its classic Ferraris
in Berkeley Square – “We have the correct
Group parent company (and the owner of Cardiff City Football Club
where Choo is also CEO) Choo had no background in cars, nor indeed
football, before getting the call from his longtime boss.
Choo trained as an accountant in Australia, before becoming an
auditor for PwC in Malaysia. His break came when he took a job
managing the finances at one of Tan’s casinos in the Seychelles and
then met the man himself who saw something in Choo that he liked.
“I was from the hospitality industry and then running casinos and
resorts for seven year. Then I moved to manage Cardiff City FC as the
CEO. The owner Vincent always wants somebody from a different
industry to take over. It’s good to have a person from a different
perspective to look at things.”
And look at things he has at H.R. Owen, in deep and
detailed ways, no doubt using his skills learned as an
auditor. “You need to have systematic changes to internal
processes,” he says.
“You need to do the ‘nitty-gritty’ to get the result, in
terms of commission structure, taking orders, the delivery
of the car, website, aftersales, finance and insurance,
events and even check-in.
“We’ve improved the whole process, including used
cars. I appointed a used car director. The used car
department the year before I joined was losing money.
In the first year of appointing that person and running
it my way, it’s added a couple of million pounds to
the bottom line.”
Normally used cars are a great source
of revenue and profit for any good dealer
so it seems strange to lose money on
the used side. I ask him what changed
and how he has made a difference,
“At the end of the day, we need to
know the facts, the trends. We are
We have great partnerships but it’s
not rocket science, it’s hospitality”
