2/10
General description of the assignment
Purpose
There are three main purposes
1. To have some experience of the working environment on a modern bridge.2. To carry out a 10-10 Zig-Zag test (one of the IMO criteria)3. To compare the test results to the IMO criteria
General information
The assignment will be carried out in the Bridge simulator at the department of Shipping andmarine technology. It is recommended to work in groups of 4 students having the followingroles:
Captain: In charge of test schedule, gives order to change rudder position
1st officer: Keep track of course and report when course is 10 deg. Starboard, 10 deg. Port, original course and when the maximum overshoot angle is reached. Take noteon overshoot angle.
2nd officer: Keep time record on all events
Helmsman: Control the rudder and report when rudder is in position

Overview
10-10 Zig-Zag tests were performed on a container vessel navigating in both deep water and shallowand on a tanker vessel operating in deep water. The tests were carried out in a bridge simulator ofChalmers University of Technology. Overshoot angles recorded from the tests are listed in table 1along with IMO requirements. Rudder angles and course angles are also plotted against time andshown in figure 1 to 3. Test data are detailed in table A-1.

Figure 3: 250 meter length tanker vessel 10-10 zig-zag test in deep water. Ship speed is 15.3 knots
Summary
Since overshoot angles of the test vessels are smaller than the IMO allowable angles, both ships meetthe maneuvering criteria set by IMO. The tests confirm that the more slender and faster vessel has agreater turning rate, and hence better maneuvering ability.
