Positive school culture, respect, and meeting all students’ needs are topics of many ongoing conversations among our administrative team at KHS. Stemming from these discussions, Lori Verhagen, Associate Principal, asked some staff members to begin to bring to light a relevant topic.
A Continued Dialogue about Race in Response to the Terrence Talley Presentation
Microaggressions
Students at Kimberly High School recently saw a presentation from Terrence Talley who shared his message of hope through personal experiences and stories from students across the country. Some of the experiences he shared revolved around his experience as a black man. These stories resonated with many staff members and students at KHS. We are fortunate to have increasing diversity among our student body, which presents new opportunities to navigate the complexities of race and differences in life experience.
Some students of color have shared that one thing they would like their peers to understand is the idea of microaggressions. Dr. Derald Wing Sue defines microaggressions as “the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.” The following are some examples that students at KHS report experiencing:
Making jokes about slavery or the holocaust to a friend who is black or Jewish (Hidden message: I don’t take your history seriously.)
Telling a black student they’re acting white (Hidden message: You only fit in when you are acting white.)
Asking a person of color where they are from (Hidden message: You are not American.)
A lack of representation of people of color in history books, curriculum, and the media (Hidden message: Your culture isn’t important enough to portray.)
Tucking an iPod or cell phone away when a student of color enters the room (Hidden message: People of color are not trustworthy.)
These are examples of racial microaggressions that minimize the experiences of people of color. To people who don’t experience these kinds of comments and actions on a regular basis, they may not seem like a big deal (hence, the term microaggressions), but it is the almost-constant barrage of these kinds of aggressions that build and can put an enormous amount of stress on people of color. Terrence Talley relates it to a quote by Muhammad Ali: “It isn’t the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it’s the pebble in your shoe.”
So, what can you do to be part of the solution? First, talk to your children about microaggressions and the impact they have on people of color. Make sure your kids understand that it is never okay to belittle another person, even under the guise of “joking.” Second, make an effort to start noticing microaggressions and talking about them with your family. This could be as simple as noticing that a drug dealer is played by a black actor and police, lawyers, and judges are portrayed by white actors in a television show, or noticing comments you overhear others make in the store and then discussing what you heard when you get back to the car. When you train yourself to notice microaggressions, you’ll realize how common they are, and you’ll be more aware of what you say to people of color. Finally, encourage your son or daughter to be a support to his or her friends of color. If your child hears a microaggression, he can support his friend simply by acknowledging the negative implication of what was said by saying something like, “Hey, I heard that joke, and I didn’t think it was funny. Do people say things like that to you a lot?” Being supportive and opening a dialogue is something that could make a big difference to students of diverse backgrounds.

The Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin (GCAW) is pleased to announce that Sydney Pierret of Kimberly High School is an Academic All-State honoree for the recently concluded 2017 girls’ golf season, receiving a designation of Honors.
Students are nominated by GCAW member coaches if they meet the following criteria: 1) A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25, 2) participation in at least 75% of their team’s varsity matches, and 3) are at least a sophomore in high school. Sydney is a student-athlete who serves as a great example to others, proving that academic and athletic successes are not mutually exclusive.

Winter is right around the corner. If weather conditions dictate that there will be no school, a decision to keep the schools closed is usually made by 6:30 a.m. Parents with students in school receive a direct call, text and/or email from our auto-call system since that is the fastest way to communicate with thousands of parents at one time. As a reminder: If you have a new phone number or email address, please update your information in the Infinite Campus parent portal or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal.
Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local stations such as these rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WHBY-1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM, WEMI-91.9 FM, WGEE-1360 AM, and WOZZ-93.5FM; and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If other school events, such as con-certs or sporting events are also cancelled because of weather, they are typically communicated through these stations as well.
The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate school closures, so we ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to the radio and T.V. stations listed for the timeliest updates.

Dear Kimberly High School Parent or Guardian,
Beginning in the 14-15 school year, the state of Wisconsin introduced a number of changes to the state’s
student assessment system. Since that time, those changes have remained consistent and include:
Aspire Early High School Assessment – grades nine and ten
ACT and WorkKeys – grade eleven
Forward Social Studies assessment – grade ten
The ACT Early High School Assessment will cover five subject areas for students in grades nine and ten:
Reading, Math, Writing, Language Arts and Science. The tests will be computer-delivered and will be spread
out over multiple days. Students in grade nine will test during their English classes the weeks of April 9 and 16.
Students in grade ten will test on April 10 & 11 during a modified school schedule. In addition, students in grade
ten will take the Wisconsin Forward Exam, a Social Studies-only test that will be administered by computer on
Wednesday, April 11.
In addition, every junior in the state of Wisconsin is required to take the ACT and Work Keys assessments. This
year those tests will be held on February 27 and 28. All juniors will report on those dates during a modified
school schedule.
Please note the modified school schedules listed on the next pages.
Additional information about the ACT Early High School and Forward assessments will be shared as they
become available.
If you have questions about the ACT Aspire Early High School assessment, please contact me by phone or
email.
Sincerely,
Jason Nate
