CNA Students Participate in Mock Interviews
In less than ten days, a new crew of medical professionals will emerge with a much needed set of job skills. In the
Certified Nursing Assistant program, students learn the necessary tools to immediatly obtain employment as a Home
Health Aide (HHA.) Upon passing their state examination, they will also become Certified Nursing Assistants. This
field is projected to grow as much as 38% within the next ten years. HHA/CNAs are an integral part of the healthcare
team. They often work in hospitals and nursing homes assisting nurses by caring for patients and helping with such
daily activities as bathing and dressing, monitoring patient vital signs, and controlling infections.
Last Wednesday, our students participated in mock interviews. A mock interview is a practice job interview. It can
help you learn how to answer difficult questions, develop interview strategies, improve your communication skills,
and reduce your stress before an actual job interview. Their fellow classmates were able to watch as they answered
questions from their teacher and staff members at their off-site training center – Florida Vocational Institute, School
of Nursing in Miramar, Florida.
Our Miami Job Corps students were asked to wear business attire, and they looked the part! Since students will soon
be participating in real-life job interviews, the mock interviews were the perfect preparation for them. Some students
were nervous about how they would do. Heisel Alonzo was the first student to be interviewed.
After presenting the three interviewers her resume, Ms. Alonzo was asked questions about her skillset, her past work
experiences, and her strengths and weaknesses. They also asked Heisel to identify five adjectives that described her.
One of the qualities she mentioned was punctuality--something most employers value. Although traffic can be hectic,
and life sometimes happens, employers want workers who regularly show up to their jobs on-time.
After every one of the CNA students had participated in the mock interviews, they were provided feedback from the
mock hiring panel that interviewed them. One of the interviewers was a FVI career placement professional.
They were relieved when the interviews were done, but all felt more prepared for their actual interviews on Friday.
