Many students in high school today can not stand
poetry. They think it’s stupid, hard to
understand and that one has to be in love in
order to write poetry. Poetry is a challenging
genre to present to high school students.
But. . . Of course that’s not what poetry is
about.
We s e e poetry everywhere if you
really look hard enough.
I want my students to fall head over heels inlove with poetry, and NEW YORK CITY is the
perfect place to find eccentric love.
I want my students to realize that their
environment has a great influence on their
creativity.
As a teacher I want them to experience poetry
first and then use these experiences to learn
about forms, literary devices, structures and
how to analyze other poems. Students will have
the opportunity to write with freedom, but attimes also writing poetry that is structured.

I really like the
ideas that this
research
presented. I can
use the ideas to
have studentsstart thinking
about their
environment as
the foundation
for the poetry
that they will create this
semester.
I would include
A handout
Where studentsGet to reflect
On how they
Feel about
poetry.

I would include a sample piece of a found poem a student wrote while riding the
subway during our class trip to the Nuyorican café located on 236 East 3rd Street New
York. As we made our way to uptown, I will distribute a small notepad to my students
so that they may jot different words that they see throughout the field trip. These
would be words seen on posters, billboards, pamphlets and even graffiti. I would like
for students to write a poem from the perspective of a poet who lives in New YorkCity. This would be a great way to have students think of themselves as poets.
The Nuyorican café is a place were some of the greatest New Yorkers come to recite
their poetry. Taking my students here would allow my students to see, smell, feel,
taste and hear poetry.

My introduction
I will write a reflection journal. Last summer I
wrote a sestina about the coconut tree in my
mother’s back yard in the Dominican Republic as
way to do some creative writing. I am taking the
role of a teacher who is returning fall semester and
wants to get her high school students interested inpoetry. I would mention the difficulties of writing
poetry, especially poetry that is more structured.
The solution that I have proposed in order to get
my students to write poetry is to have them use
their environment.
I would like to create an activity where students will
write a sestina about a tree in their neighborhood.
This way students create poetry that follows a
certain structure and formation.

I want to allow students to write different styles of poetry. One of my favorites,
which I think would be popular with students is allowing them to write shape
poems. I would include a sample piece of a students shape poem. I would ask
students to take a picture of something in their community so that we may work on
it in class to create our poems.

This assignment would show allow students to compose
beautifully structured poems based on pictures from TimesSquare. I will give students the opportunity to choosefrom what kind of poetry they would like to compose. Thiswould serve as another visual genre for my paper.
