MTHFR & METHYLATION…IT’S SIMPLE, RIGHT?

And So Very Important….But What is MTHFR and how important is it, Really?

© Dr. Jess Armine 2015

Here’s Where it All Began…MTHFRWhat is it?

Quite simply MTHFR is a gene

Genes encode (creates) enzymes

Enzymes (among other things) make our body’s biochemistry work

MTHFR is known by names like “The Mother Father” Gene or other unsavory names, MTHFR means Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase

Why do people pay sooooo much attention to MTHFR????

© Dr. Jess Armine 2015

What is MTHFR’s Function?

MTHFR changes dietary folate and folic acid (useless in and of itself) into forms that the body can use, like methylfolate

Green, leafy vegetables, folinic acid and methylfolate are the best source of active folates.

Sorta Like This

Why Did I Explain MTHFR & Methylation Thus?

To give you a sense of what this pathway does and its relative importance

To give you perspective of where methylation fits in the entirety of your biochemical pathways

To empower you with the knowledge that MTHFR & Methylation are NOT the alpha and omega of your health problems

To give a basis for the remainder of this podcast

How Should The Genes Be Used?

Bio-Individualized Medicine

Essentially

You Can’t Just Treat the Genes (it’s an

impossibility)

Treat The Body Using the Genes as Guideposts

In Other Words, You MUST Treat What Caused the SNPs to Express Because…Genetics Loads the Gun but Environment Pulls The Trigger

WHAT IS BEING PRESENTED TO YOU?

But….this takes time and effort. A simplified approach was demanded….is it good or bad? It depends….

EDUCATING THE HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONER

What are the docs learning?

What it Takes…To Practice “Methylation”?

I Use The Term Loosely

In other words, what does it take to be able to care for complex cases with the expertise of Shawn Bean, Dr. Jess Armine, Dr. Ben Lynch, Dr. Amy Yasko, Sterling Hill, Cynthia Smith, etc. ?

Research

Experience

Collaboration

Willingness to think outside the box

Ability and willingness to take the proper time and effort for each case.

There Are No Shortcuts!!!But…..

Quickie Weekend Courses Abound

Is This Learning to Heal or A Way To Increase Your Income?

Your Patient’s ALL Have Methylation Problems

All??? The Whole World??? Everyone has Methylation Problems?

And for $1000, you too can partake in this wonderful method of healing….

This one is tied to one of the programs above.

Everyone is jumping on the “Methylation“ Bandwagon

The question you should be asking at this point is…

Did My Doctor Take One of These Quickie Educational Courses? How Do I Know?

I Guess You Could Ask, But, Just in Case…

Hints: All of a sudden, your HCP

starts talking Methylation coupled with:

Using a computer program and/or using marketing material from a vitamin company or practice management group.

Puts in place a brand new set of vitamins…and the biggest indicator

You walk out of the office with a shopping bag full of product

How SHOULD my HCP act?

What should you expect when your HCP says they “do” methylation?

Use Genetics in Its Proper Place

Methylation Is but a small part of your overall physiologyYou need to treat the physiology….NOT the genes!!!

This is What a HCP Should Be Doing

Your HCP should be willing and able to identify and treat not only the root cause(s) of dysfunction but also attend to the "downstream" effect. That is, fixing whatever the primary causative agent did to the body.

As a minimum, the practitioner should have expertise in Neuro-Endo-Immunology

Epigenetics/nutrigenomics

Acquired (secondary) mitochondrial dysfunction

Cell wall integrity

AND be willing and able to take the proper time and effort to assess each component’s contribution to the presenting complaints. AKA, getting to the bottom of what is ailing the body.

In Other Words

To Heal a Fish Make the Water Healthy

Shawn Bean and I created Bio-Individualized Medicine to teach HCPs to place genetics and integrative medicine in its proper perspective for YOUR benefit.

(To forestall arguments: evidencing this is the fact that, although offered, we don’t have our own product line. We consult and teach and do so without the questionable stimulus of our own products)

Health Care Practitioners

How Do I Choose?

Good Question

There are many referral lists out there, but one has to ask, “How did they qualify for the list?”

Did they take a course with/without a test?

Did they solely attend an online or weekend seminar/webinar

Is there no rhyme or reason?

More:• Did anyone work with these practitioners and

make sure they know what they are talking about

AND WE ARE PROUD OF OUR PRACTITIONERS!

We Have a Referral List

Go to: Click:

www.methylationsupport.com Recommended Methylation Practitioners

These Practitioners have met the following requirements:

• They have attended (physically or virtually) the MABIM course in January 2015.

• AND/OR

• Have taken 2 of 3 methylation courses from Dr. Ben Lynch

• AND/OR

• Have completed FDN training

• AND/OR

• Have completed the entire webinar series from The Center for Bio-Individualized Medicine with a score of 90 or above (COMING SOON)

• AND have spent sufficient time mentoring with Shawn Bean and Dr. Jess Armine and have demonstrated competency in Bio-Individualized Medicine. (We are the ONLY people doing this!)

In Conclusion, What have we learned?

MTHFR and Methylation is important but, in reality, is a small fish in a big ocean.

Treating MTHFR and Methylation, in and of itself, is an impossibility (you can’t change the snps but you can affect their expression).

As such, products geared toward treating the snps are of questionable benefit.

Quickie weekend course, short webinars can only introduce these concepts but it takes much more to reach a level of expertise

Computer programs that base nutritional recommendations on the snps are working from an inaccurate and dangerous premise

When choosing a HCP, be discerning as to their actual expertise in this important area of health care.

But, Most of all…

If you want to get well…

Treat the water in order to heal the fish…
