"Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name."
Psalm 100:4
Messiah Lutheran Church
Welcomes You to the Lord's House
2
Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe
this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During
our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in
a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the
prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge
you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you
have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.
First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”
brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you
have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His
perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the
beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find
the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about
Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.
If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus
on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.
If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the
sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.
O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;
my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.
Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.
So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4
Luther's Morning Prayer
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have
kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this
day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into
Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel
be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE SONG OF INVOCATION “You’re Worthy of My Praise”
THE INVOCATION
P: We celebrate today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and
of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
THE CONFESSION OF SINS
P: Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sings to Him, and ask His
gracious forgiveness.
The Gospel stories of Jesus often have a familiarity to us that may diminish what the sacred writer wants us to understand. Simply put, there has never been any individual on this earth like Jesus. He has divine power that can heal the sick, revive the dead, and multiply bread and fish to feed multitudes. And He can even walk on water. Nobody else has ever done that. Only Jesus. As we worship and hear the Gospel account shared today, let us rediscover in Jesus our one and only Savior. We are a "singing church,” so we follow the advice of the Apostle Paul as found in Colossians 3:16, to "teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

C: We confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven
and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature
and by deed. We have not always put God first. We have used His
holy name in ways that do not honor Him. We have not always been
thoughtful caretakers of His creation and have not shared His
bounty with others at all times. We have been heedless in word and
deed and have not always kept our thoughts, words, and deeds pure
and honorable. We sinned in ways we know and in ways we do not
even recognize. We have wished for that which is not rightfully ours
and have not put the best construction on all things and on all
people. We pray God to have mercy on us, to forgive us all our sins,
and to bring us to everlasting life. Amen.
P: Our gracious heavenly Father sent His Son to give His life as the sacrifice
for our sins. Our Lord Jesus is the bread of life from heaven, coming in
the Lord’s Supper to assure us of salvation until we join Him in eternity.
The Holy Spirit uses Word and Sacrament to nurture our faith as we live
out the new life God provides. As a called and ordained servant of Christ,
and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
THE COLLECT OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: God of love, in His ministry, Your Son, Jesus, showed His mastery over all
the forces of nature, including those of great power. Help us to keep our
eyes fixed on Him and to trust His guidance in all things as we pass
through this world, confident in His care; through the same Jesus Christ,
Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
THE FIRST LESSON Job 38:1-11
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:2 “Who is this
that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for action like
a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.4 “Where were
you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have
understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who
laid its cornerstone, 7 when the morning stars sang together and all the
In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23) The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament. It coordinates with the Gospel lesson, and is found on page 443 in the pew Bible. A pattern of Scripture readings for each week of the year comes from the Old Testament. Jesus also kept this practice.

THE GRADUAL
P: 1I love you,
C: O Lord, my strength.
P: 2The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
C: My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
P: 3I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
C: And I am saved from my enemies.
P: 4The cords of death encompassed me;
C: The torrents of destruction assailed me;
P: 5the cords of Sheol entangled me;
C: The snares of death confronted me.
P: 6In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help.
C: From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his
ears.
THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 10:8-17
8But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your
heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9because, if you confess
with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God
raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one
believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is
saved. 11For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be
put to shame.” 12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the
same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13For
“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14But how are
they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to
believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear
without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are
sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the
good news!” 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says,
“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17So faith comes
from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
The Gradual is from Psalm 18, found on page 454 in the pew Bible. The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 946 in the pew Bible.

THE GOSPEL SONG “Open Our Eyes, Lord”
THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 14:22-33 22Immediately [Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go before
him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had
dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat by this time was a
long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against
them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on
the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were
terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27But
immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be
afraid.” 28And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come
to you on the water.” 29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and
walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind, he
was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31Jesus
immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O
you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32And when they got into the boat,
the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you
are the Son of God.”
P: This is the Gospel of our Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day
He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the
right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to
judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy
Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Gospel Song may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Gospel Lesson is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 871 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then by confessing our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith.
Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus,
To reach out and touch Him, and say that we love Him.
Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen.
Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus.

THE SERMON HYMN “Be Still, My Soul” LSB 752
THE SERMON "Come to Jesus” Matthew 14:28
1. Come to Jesus if you have unanswered questions.
2. Come to Jesus when you are in a storm.
3. Do not let anything stand between you and Jesus.
The Sermon Hymn reflects the message for today, as well as stressing the words we just read in the Gospel lesson. The Sermon applies God’s Word to our lives and helps to equip us to fulfill our baptismal calling to new life in Christ.

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S TEACHING “Be Still, My Soul”
THE OFFERING PRAYER
THE OFFERING ANTHEM “There Was Jesus”
THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION
THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people
according to their needs. O God, our heavenly Father, You sent Your Son
Jesus Christ to be the payment for the sins of the whole world, for all
people.
Every time I try to make it on my own, every time I try to stand, I start to fall.
And all those lonely roads that I have traveled on, there was Jesus.
When the life I built came crashing to the ground,
When the friends I had were nowhere to be found.
I couldn’t see it then but I can see it now, well there was Jesus.
Chorus:
In the waiting, in the searching, in the healing, in the hurting,
Like a blessing buried in the broken pieces.
Every minute, every moment, where I’ve been or where I’m going.
Even when I didn’t know it or couldn’t see it, and there was Jesus.
For this man who needs amazing kind of grace,
For forgiveness and at a price I couldn’t pay.
I’m not perfect so I thank God every day. There was Jesus. Chorus
On the mountain, in the valleys. There was Jesus.
In the shadows, of the alleys. There was Jesus.
In the fire, in the flood. There was Jesus. Always is and always was.
No, I never walk alone. You’re always there. Chorus
We present our gifts to God to symbolize the offering of ourselves to the Lord, saying thank You to God, and showing we trust Him to supply all our needs. (Romans 12:1) After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those watching the service on the live stream, please fill out an attendance card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this online as well. For those in attendance, there are prayer cards at the welcome desk as you exit the Sanctuary that you can fill out. Thank you. Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please take them with you to use for your prayer time this week.
Be still, my soul; the hour is hast’ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.

C: Joining with Your children from all countries and walks of life, may we
reflect Your love, mercy and grace to all those we meet, serving as
Your light in the world.
P: Lord, there is such unrest in the world. There are protests, riots,
vandalism and violence in many countries. While there are those seeking
solutions for problems through positive, constructive efforts, there are
those who embrace violence and destruction, bringing misery, suffering
and even death to many.
C: O Powerful God, we pray to You with a sense of desperation-please,
Lord, we are crying out to You to heal our land, and deliver us from
the evil that is flourishing.
P: Strengthen our Christian faith and give us the courage to reach out to our
communities to deepen understanding and appreciation for Your children.
You are the One who can bring the healing and understanding that our
world needs.
C: Open our minds and hearts to Your voice and show us what You would
have us to do.
P: Our families are searching for the right decisions to make for their loved
ones and are being presented with conflicting ideas. Many are searching
for employment and looking to You for guidance.
C: Lord, show us the truth that will lead to healing, hope and restoration.
P: O Lord Jesus Christ, in Your Blessed Sacrament You give us Your body and
blood for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith.
C: As we receive these gifts, help us to make confession of the unity You
give in this Sacrament. Keep us mindful of this blessing from You, so
that all who receive Your body and blood may receive it to their good
and the glory of Your holy name.
P: All these things and whatever else You would have us ask, grant us,
Heavenly Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now
lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.
C: Amen.
THE SANCTUS
“Sanctus” is the Latin word for holy, and is the name of an important hymn of Christian liturgy. It is sung at the heart of the eucharistic prayer, the prayer of consecration of the bread and wine. The text is taken from Isaiah 6:3, which describes the prophet’s vision of the throne of God surrounded by six-winged, ministering seraphim. This text is also influenced by Revelation. 4:8. The concluding text, "blessed is He who comes.”
10
The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 & Luke 11:2-4) The Words of Institution are a collection of all four Gospel accounts of the Last Supper, based on the oldest and fullest text found in 1 Corinthians 11.
The Agnus Dei is a canticle that found its way into the liturgy as early as the 8th century. Following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist acclaims Him as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." John 1:36
THE LORD’S PRAYER
C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day
our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples
and said: "Take eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in
remembrance of me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper,
and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all
of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for
the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: And also with you.

THE COMMUNION
If you are a guest today,
please read page 15 before communing.
“Amazing Grace”
THE COMMUNION HYMNS ”Come to Jesus”
“Feed Us Now”
A Prayer Before Communing: Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation, I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this Holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. “I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.” Genesis 9:11, 15 “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah 26:3
Feed us now, Bread of life, in this holy meal;
Let us know Your love anew, we hunger for You.
Feed us now, Bread of life, come and live within;
Let Your peace be ours today, Lord Jesus, we pray.
Piece of bread, glass of wine; Lord, this food is good!
Love and mercy come to us; Your promise we trust.
Piece of bread, glass of wine, who can understand
How His mercy works in these? Yet, Lord we believe.
Weak and wounded sinner, lost and left to die;
O raise your head, for Love is passing by.
Come to Jesus, come to Jesus, come to Jesus and live!
Now your burden’s lifted and carried far away,
And precious blood has washed away the stain.
So sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus, sing to Jesus and live!
Like a newborn baby, don’t be afraid to crawl.
And remember when you walk , sometimes we fall.
So fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus, fall on Jesus and live!
Sometimes the way is lonely, and steep and filled with pain,
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain,
Then cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus, cry to Jesus and live!
And when the love spills over, and music fills the night,
And when you can’t contain your joy inside,
Then dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus, dance for Jesus and live!
And with your final heartbeat kiss the world goodbye,
Then go in peace and laugh on Glory’s side.
And fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus and live!
Fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus, fly to Jesus and live!
12
A Prayer after Communing– Almighty and everlasting God I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ, My Lord. Amen The Post-Communion Song is based on the Words of Institution. We have eaten Christ's body and drank His blood. The personal encounter with Christ and His gifts in the Lord's Supper leads indeed to a joyful service to "share the peace, hope, and life with others!"
“Good, Good Father”
THE POST COMMUNION SONG
God is here, O so near; nearer than our thoughts,
Stay with us where’er we go; Lord, help us to grow.
God is here, O so near, in this heaven’s meal.
May we always feed on You, on the bread that’s true.
Oh, I've heard a thousand stories of what they think You’re like.
But I've heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night.
And You tell me that You’re pleased and that I'm never alone.
Chorus: You're a good, good Father.
It's who You are. It's who You are.
It's who You are and I'm loved by You.
It's who I am. It's who I am. It's who I am.
Oh, I've seen many searching for answers far and wide.
But I know we're all searching for answers only You provide
Because You know just what we need before we say a word. (Chorus twice)
You are perfect in all of Your ways. You are perfect in all of Your ways.
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us.
You are perfect in all of Your ways. You are perfect in all of Your ways.
You are perfect in all of Your ways to us.
Oh, it’s love so undeniable I can hardly speak. Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think.
As You call me deeper still; as You call me deeper still;
As You call me deeper still into love, love, love. (Chorus twice)
13
Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25; Matt. 18:19-20) You are welcome to take this bulletin home with you for devotional purposes this week. If you want to discard it, please return it to an usher table in the back. We enter to pray and praise and we leave with a renewed commitment to serve and witness!
THE BENEDICTION
P: The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.
C: Amen.
THE SILENT PRAYER
THE MATTERS OF IMPORTANCE
THE CLOSING HYMN “He Reigns”
It's the song of the redeemed rising from the African plain.
It's the song of the forgiven drowning out the Amazon rain.
The song of Asian believers filled with God's holy fire.
It's every tribe, every tongue, every nation-
A love song born of a grateful choir. It's all God's children singing:
Chorus: Glory, glory, hallelujah He reigns, He reigns!
It's all God's children singing
Glory, glory, hallelujah He reigns, He reigns!
Let it rise about the four winds, caught up in the heavenly sound.
Let praises echo from the towers of cathedrals
To the faithful gathered underground.
Of all the songs sung from the dawn of creation,
Some were meant to persist.
Of all the bells rung from a thousand steeples,
None rings truer than this-It's all God's children singing (Chorus)

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your
Savior and Lord, that with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and
you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy
Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED" communion. "Close"
communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek
to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have
not communed with us before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak
to our Pastor or an Elder before communing.
1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?
2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's
mercy in Christ?
3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and
the power of the devil?
4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion
with His true Body and Blood?
5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?
At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the
common cup, are offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the
Sanctuary proceed to the altar first, standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the
side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind the usher. This will provide a
prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.
A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear
glasses in the individual trays. Gluten-free wafers are available from the usher tables at the back.
