perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the

beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find

Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.

THE CONFESSION OF SINS

P: Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sings to Him, and ask His

gracious forgiveness.

The Gospel stories of Jesus often have a familiarity to us that may diminish what the sacred writer wants us to understand. Simply put, there has never been any individual on this earth like Jesus. He has divine power that can heal the sick, revive the dead, and multiply bread and fish to feed multitudes. And He can even walk on water. Nobody else has ever done that. Only Jesus. As we worship and hear the Gospel account shared today, let us rediscover in Jesus our one and only Savior. We are a "singing church,” so we follow the advice of the Apostle Paul as found in Colossians 3:16, to "teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

C: We confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven

and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature

and by deed. We have not always put God first. We have used His

holy name in ways that do not honor Him. We have not always been

thoughtful caretakers of His creation and have not shared His

bounty with others at all times. We have been heedless in word and

deed and have not always kept our thoughts, words, and deeds pure

and honorable. We sinned in ways we know and in ways we do not

even recognize. We have wished for that which is not rightfully ours

and have not put the best construction on all things and on all

people. We pray God to have mercy on us, to forgive us all our sins,

and to bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

P: Our gracious heavenly Father sent His Son to give His life as the sacrifice

for our sins. Our Lord Jesus is the bread of life from heaven, coming in

the Lord’s Supper to assure us of salvation until we join Him in eternity.

The Holy Spirit uses Word and Sacrament to nurture our faith as we live

out the new life God provides. As a called and ordained servant of Christ,

and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of

the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

P: God of love, in His ministry, Your Son, Jesus, showed His mastery over all

the forces of nature, including those of great power. Help us to keep our

eyes fixed on Him and to trust His guidance in all things as we pass

through this world, confident in His care; through the same Jesus Christ,

Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

THE FIRST LESSON Job 38:1-11

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:2 “Who is this

that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for action like

a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.4 “Where were

you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have

understanding. 5 Who determined its measurements—surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it? 6 On what were its bases sunk, or who

In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23) The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament. It coordinates with the Gospel lesson, and is found on page 443 in the pew Bible. A pattern of Scripture readings for each week of the year comes from the Old Testament. Jesus also kept this practice.

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day

He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the

right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to

judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Gospel Song may change weekly or the ordinary verse is from John 6:68. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Gospel Lesson is selected according to the season or festival Sunday of the Church Year, and is found on page 871 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then by confessing our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith.

according to their needs. O God, our heavenly Father, You sent Your Son

Every time I try to make it on my own, every time I try to stand, I start to fall.

And all those lonely roads that I have traveled on, there was Jesus.

When the life I built came crashing to the ground,

When the friends I had were nowhere to be found.

We present our gifts to God to symbolize the offering of ourselves to the Lord, saying thank You to God, and showing we trust Him to supply all our needs. (Romans 12:1) After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those watching the service on the live stream, please fill out an attendance card. For those in attendance, there are prayer cards at the welcome desk as you exit the Sanctuary that you can fill out. Thank you. Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. C: Joining with Your children from all countries and walks of life, may we

reflect Your love, mercy and grace to all those we meet, serving as

Your light in the world.

P: Lord, there is such unrest in the world. There are protests, riots,

vandalism and violence in many countries. While there are those seeking

solutions for problems through positive, constructive efforts, there are

those who embrace violence and destruction, bringing misery, suffering

and even death to many.

C: O Powerful God, we pray to You with a sense of desperation-please,

Lord, we are crying out to You to heal our land, and deliver us from

the evil that is flourishing.

P: Strengthen our Christian faith and give us the courage to reach out to our

communities to deepen understanding and appreciation for Your children.

You are the One who can bring the healing and understanding that our

world needs.

C: Open our minds and hearts to Your voice and show us what You would

have us to do.

P: Our families are searching for the right decisions to make for their loved

ones and are being presented with conflicting ideas. Many are searching

for employment and looking to You for guidance.

C: Lord, show us the truth that will lead to healing, hope and restoration.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, in Your Blessed Sacrament You give us Your body and

blood for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith.

C: As we receive these gifts, help us to make confession of the unity You

give in this Sacrament. Keep us mindful of this blessing from You, so

that all who receive Your body and blood may receive it to their good

and the glory of Your holy name.

P: All these things and whatever else You would have us ask, grant us,

Heavenly Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.

THE SANCTUS

“Sanctus” is the Latin word for holy, and is the name of an important hymn of Christian liturgy. It is sung at the heart of the eucharistic prayer, the prayer of consecration of the bread and wine. The text is taken from Isaiah 6:3, which describes the prophet’s vision of the throne of God surrounded by six-winged, ministering seraphim. This text is also influenced by Revelation. 4:8. The concluding text, "blessed is He who comes.”

The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 & Luke 11:2-4) The Words of Institution are a collection of all four Gospel accounts of the Last Supper, based on the oldest and fullest text found in 1 Corinthians 11.

The Agnus Dei is a canticle that found its way into the liturgy as early as the 8th century. Following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist acclaims Him as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." John 1:36

A Prayer after Communing– Almighty and everlasting God I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ, My Lord. Amen The Post-Communion Song is based on the Words of Institution. We have eaten Christ's body and drank His blood. The personal encounter with Christ and His gifts in the Lord's Supper leads indeed to a joyful service to "share the peace, hope, and life with others!"

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your

Savior and Lord, that with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and

you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy

Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED" communion. "Close"

communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek

to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have

not communed with us before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak

to our Pastor or an Elder before communing.

1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's

mercy in Christ?

3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and

the power of the devil?

4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion

with His true Body and Blood?

5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?

At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the

common cup, are offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the

Sanctuary proceed to the altar first, standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the

side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind the usher. This will provide a

prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.
