• Systemic name: 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione

• Central nervous system stimulant – wards off drowsiness and restores alertness

• Plant alkaloid

• Can be consumed in different forms: coffee, tea, soda…

• Psychoactive drug– Chemical alters brain function– Temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness, & behavior

Caffeinism – extremely dependent on caffeine & continue to take/consume caffeine in order to perform daily functions

back

Caffeine has a significant effect on spiders

What about its effect on humans?

back

• Stimulates heart, respiratory system, & CNS

• Makes blood more “sludgy” – raises level of fatty acids in blood

• Messages are passed along nervous system more quickly

• Headaches, nervousness, & dizziness

• Stomach produces more acid; irritates stomach lining

• Diuretic effect – increases urination

• May cause sleep-depreivation – nervous system too stimulated

• Heightens intensity of mental activity– More alert; no more feelings of fatige/drowsiness

back

• Unhealthy study habits low scores on amount of time per study session

– Study session: time in days when preparation began AND…

– Total amount of info that students believed they were able to retain

• Hope L. Graven from Department of Psych in Loyola University (New Orleans)

• Hypothesis: “The more caffeine a student consumes while studying, the more accurately his/her study habits would be labeled as ‘unhealthy.’”

back

• 78 college students -- 20 males & 58 female

• Students rated themselves on their study habits when preparing for an exam

• Students chosen using convenience sampling method -- finding any student at his/her convenience

• Students filled out questionnaires– Gender, GPA, age, major, consumption of caffeine, study habits…

back

• 55% students consume caffeine while they studied• Mean amount of caffeine consumed: .9 with standard deviation of .99• Mean time for when participants began to study: 2.05

– Participants would begin studying about one week before test• Mean amount of time per study session: 2.67

– 1-4 hours per study session• Mean amount of info students believed they retained: 2.86•Mean amount of anxiety: 2.88

Caffeine consumption does not make

study habits unhealthy. back

• Few participants responded & said they did not consume caffeine when studying

• Participants who did consume caffeine while studying said they consumed only one cup of coffee or one can of soda

• Researchers wanted to find participants who consumed more than one cup/can in order to support their hypothesis better

Hmm.. I wonder what the

volume of this dome tent is!

Me too. Let’s try to find out!

back

• Imagine the tent is a smooth hemisphere

• Use equation (2/3)πr3 to find volume

I know! We can use

geometry to solve the problem!

Measured 3 radii– 1– 1.3 (height)– 1.21 (left to right)

front view top view

1m

1.21 m1.3 m

back

Volume = 3.468 cubic meters

Since we measured 3 radii, we can

approximate the overall volume by

taking the average of all the volumes we found using each

radii

[ (2/3)π13 + (2/3)π1.33 + (2/3)π1.213]

3

• Sub each radius into the equation for volume

• Take the average

back

VOLUME=average height * area of hexagonal base

Hmm.. Will I get the same

answer if I try it another

way?

By taking measurements

along a diagonal

radius, we can…

• Find average height along diagonal radius

• Average height = 0.956 m

top viewfront view

back

Area of hexagonal base = 3.79

Now we have to find the area of

the hexagonal

base

2.42 m

1.37 m

1.0 m

back

volume = (average height)(area of hexagonal base)

0.956 * 3.79 = 3.623 cubic meters

Soo..

back

– Area = (2/3)*b*h– Height of tent modeled by

another big parabola on top– Measured 3 heights along

x-axis h = -1.292x² + 2.638x

To find the area of any parabola:

x

h

Front (Cross Section) View21

1.3h(x)

Parabolic cross sections

Tent outline

back

• base = Z2 – Z1

– Z2 = .525x + .685– Z1 = -.525x - .685

b = 1.05x + 1.37

To get the base of any parabola:

z

x

h

Z1

Z2

.685

- .685

2

Top View

back

• A(x) = (2/3)*[b*h]• Endpts. are x=0, x=2

Sweet! Now we can

integrate…

Volume = (2/3)* (1.05x + 1.37)(-1.292x² + 2.638x) dx =

2.979 cubic meters

0b h

back

• Lose a significant amount of area on sides of tent– Mainly entrance & back ends– Areas do not follow smooth parabolic cross

section “pattern”• Purposely raised to allow extra room for campers
