Gary Newman, Wood Knowledge Wales & ASBP

Meeting the Climate Crisis demands / Health & Well-Being

Gary is the Chief Executive of Woodknowledge Wales (www.woodknowledgewales.co.uk), which is a for-public-good member organisation focused upon the transformation of Wales into a high value forest nation. Gary is also co-founder and Chair of the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (www.asbp.org.uk) - an organisation committed to bringing product sustainability, resource use and the principles of the circular economy to the centre of the construction debate. Gary is a construction engineer by training and early career. After completing a wood science masters at Bangor University, Gary established Plant Fibre Technology Ltd and has been instrumental in taking a number of plant based products from concept to market. In recent years Gary has acted in a consultancy capacity for governments in both Cardiff and Westminster focused on the strategic development of forest industries in general and the use of timber in construction in particular.

John Palmer, Passivhaus TrustPassivhaus route to zero carbon— the policy

John is currently the Research and Policy Director at the Passivhaus Trust. John is a certifi ed Passivhaus consultant, SAP Assessor, BREEAM Assessor, Retrofi t Coordinator and experienced project manager. As the Managing Director of a Building Physics consultancy, he has personally led several Passivhaus projects and has built his own almost-Passivhaus home. He has a wide ranging experience in the built environment including low-energy and Passivhaus design, building services design, on-site project management and neighbourhood planning.Prior to moving into the construction sector, John spent 16 years as an engineer in the Royal Navy. John is also a Town Councillor and a director of his local Community Land Trust.

Charlie Luxton, Principle Charlie Luxton DesignCommunity led approach and reduce profit motiveCharlie Luxton is passionate about sustainability and architecture. He has spent the last 20 years designing sustainable buildings and making television programmes about architecture and design.

This combination of doing and talking is what Charlie is all about.

Charlie is interested in creating architecture fit for the 21st century; designs that respond to local materials, traditions and climate.

He is the principle of Charlie Luxton Design (CLD), an architecture firm of eight that specialises in sustainable buildings. Working on projects that range from Community led housing, through to recording studios and one off homes CLD always seek to deliver sustainable architecture to the highest standard. They begin the design process from people and place; the client and the site, it’s from here that their architecture grows.

Jae Cotterell, Passivhaus Architect and Director PH15Using low carbon materials and Passivhaus principles – a case study Compton PassivhausJae is an experienced Architect and Consultant in energy efficient sustainable new-build housing. Jae completed her architectural education at the Universities of Nottingham & Westminster, and then later at the Centre of Alternative Technology gained a Masters in Environmental Design. Jae is the co-author of The Passivhaus Handbook.

Jae is director of Passivhaus Homes Ltd. in partnership with Jonathan Williams. Between them they have developed the PH15 System, a complete Passivhaus compliant construction solution for new-build, custom build or social housing projects. PH15 provides an early and reliably costed solution which de-risks the delivery of extremely airtight, super-efficient houses, while retaining high levels of bespoke design flexibility. PH15 meets the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge carbon reduction targets for both operational and embodied carbon, offering a tried and tested route to net zero carbon housing. Part of Jae’s role at PHH is to deliver training and education targeted at the critical transition required within our construction industry in the light of the current climate emergency.
