"Escaping Sin’s Trap"
On the family farm in Ohio, a boy and his daddy found rats in their barn. Since they did not want the rats nesting there, his dad bought some rat traps, baited them with cheese, and set them around the barn. The next morning this little boy couldn’t wait to see if their traps had caught anything during the night. But he found all the traps empty except the last one. The last one had the severed leg of a rat in it, and the boy asked his dad what had happened. His dad siad the trapped rat had chewed his own leg off. “Why would he do something like that, dad?” “Son, he did it because he desperately wanted out of the trap.” What a grim story! Yet Jesus told one very much like it, beginning in Matthew 5:29. The Lord knew that people would be caught in the seductive trap of sin, and he wanted us to know how important it was for us to escape. So he said, “if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell...and cut off the hand that causes you to sin.” Think it over. How much is heaven worth to you? You need to shed anything that makes you unable to get through the gate.
