Who’s the Boss?

We All Are!

“He who has never learned to obey, can never be a good commander” Aristotle

Sometimes a Leader must go with the flow, and most importantly, learn from others, which also involves following others.

We are the Leaders (or Bosses) of our Own Life

Significant Others

“Give my daughter an opportunity to make a decision on her own, without my immediate input.”

McDonald’s Survey Answers-Empowering Actions

“Allow people to make more decisions on their own, even if they are contrary or 'wrong' in my my opinion. Allow the independence to handle situations without interfering or intervening.”

We are ALL Leaders

“You must be the change you want to see in the world” -Mahatma Gandhi

In order to inspire others, and lead others, you must demonstrate the qualities and actions that you want your followers to do. You can only lead others by action.

Trust—McDonald’s Survey Responses to-How can you Empower others in your Life?

Trust people Support them

Allow them to speak their mind and let ideas come to life

Maintain a positive outlook (when possible) display reliability

Let them follow their instincts, let people learn what works for them

By trusting them to do tasks I normally do and letting them know I depend on them to follow through.

Trust in others to do their jobs without micro managing through concise communication

Give my trust to those who report to me by not asking for detailed check-ins on their projects, and by allowing them to follow through on their ideas even if i am not sure it will work

Empowerment Temperature

Take your Empowerment Temperature frequently Hot is including people, offering encouragement, reinforcing the positive, communicating.

Cold is “freezing others out”, focusing on the negative, not trusting, not communicating.

When we become AWARE of our reflex response, we can stop and THINK before we react.

Will getting upset make the situation better?

Will taking action make the situation better?

Consider that your Attitude may be affecting how you see a situation.

ATTITUDE: ATTITUDE: REFRAME IT!REFRAME IT!

Think about how you might “Empower” the other person

Rather than “difficult”, think of a co-worker as “challenging”

Put yourself in the other person's shoes – maybe there's a good reason your boss seems unreasonable lately

We can’t control all of the things that can cause us stress

But . . . We can control our RESPONSE to them if we “Reflect” before we “React”

or

“It's not worth getting upset”“OH !#&$%!”

We do have a Choice!

Communication--Open communication is critical to any Empowerment agenda and that communication must be both ways.

Everyone needs to feel comfortable that their communication won't be ridiculed and quickly dismissed and management must make sure their communication is inclusive and positive to breed a "Communication Comfort Zone".
