Plagiarismisthefailuretoindicatethesourceofworkeitherwithquotationmarksorfootnotes.Thesourcecanbeaphrase,agraphicelement,aproof,specificlanguage,oranideaderivedfromtheworkofanotherperson.Notethatmaterialonthewebisanotherperson’sworkandisthereforeequallysubjecttotherulesonplagiarismandcheatingasanyothersourcematerial.Cheatingand/orplagiarismonanessayassignmentwillresultinafailinggrade(0points)forthatassignment.Theessayinwhichthecheatingoccurswillnotbeexcludedfromtheoffendingstudent’sassignmentsincludedingradecalculations;thepointsforthatessayzero(0)willbefactoredintothegrade.Furthermore,thecheatingstudent’sfinalgradewillbereducedonefulllettergrade.Acheatingstudent’sfinalgradewillbeimpactedsignificantly.Inaddition,casesofcheatingandplagiarismwillbesubmittedtoandreviewedbytheDean’sOffice;moreseverepenaltiesmaybeimposed,uptoandincludingexpulsionfromtheHeinzSchool.AcademicDishonesty:Studentsareexpectedtomaintainthehighestethicalstandardsinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.Cheatingonexamsandtermpapers(i.e.plagiarismandunauthorizedcollaboration)isobviouslydiscouragedandwillbetreatedappropriately.Theusualpenaltyforviolationsisafailinggradefortheparticularassignmentinquestion;however,insomeinstances,suchactionsmayresultinafailinggradeforthecourse.
