Why can we travel now?

•It is only recently (in the 20th Century), that people travel for pleasure.

•It is because we now have time and money to do so.

•For example, there are new labour laws that give time for travel. (Most people get at least 3 weeks of paid vacation)

Technology

•Technology also helps in the ability for people to travel.

•Inventions of trains, planes and cars and their mass productions give people opportunity to travel

Mass Tourism

•Is the movement of large numbers of people to specialized tourist locations

•Places have been created with the intention of being a large tourist destination▫Resort towns▫Theme parks▫Tourism business districts

•One of the 3 major types of international trade (oil and cars being the other 2)

•There are two main kinds of tourism employment▫Direct ▫Indirect

Direct

•Direct: jobs generated by companies and government departments that deal directly with the travelling public.

•These include: transportation companies, hotels, travel agents, and tourism information offices.

Indirect

•Indirect: jobs that support the direct employment sector

•For example: a resort hotel must have brochures and stationary printed so it will have a local printing company do the job
