TWENTY SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B At that time, John said to Jesus,
“Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name,
and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.”
Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him.
There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name
who can at the same time speak ill of me.”
Today the Gospel and the first reading have a similar theme; people are upset that the “wrong” people are doing God’s bidding. The
disciples are bothered by someone, besides themselves, driving out demons in the name of Jesus. As human nature would have it the
disciples wanted exclusive control over all ministry done in the name of Jesus—anyone else doing these things was a threat to them. This
Gospel raises some good points for our reflection: does God put limits on the “good” that people do even outside the Church; can God
respect and even love people who do not believe in the “Name of Jesus;” or, can people who do not profess the name of Christ experience
eternal salvation? Sometimes we need to think about the mystery of God’s love and mercy and we must face the truth that God can work
in his own ways even if we don’t always understand.
In the period of time before the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) we frequently heard that “outside the Church there is no salvation.”
In essence this phrase meant that unless someone was a baptized Catholic they could not expect salvation. This difficulty was that this
statement does not fully reflect the tradition of the Church. The effort to explain things concisely led to a simplistic and lacking way of
looking at the issue. As Catholics we believe that salvation comes through the life-giving suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Salvation is from Christ and through Christ alone. It is the sacrifice of Jesus that atones for sin. The question is really; to whom can this
atonement apply?
Salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus applies to all the baptized, for through baptism we belong to Christ. Baptized
Catholics, and non-Catholics are brothers and sisters of Christ. We also believe that people who have never heard the Gospel, but try to
live a good life according to their conscience can also be redeemed. So, the Hindu in India or the Muslim in Iran who lives their life
decently and tries to be faithful can experience eternal salvation—but redemption comes through Christ alone.
As Catholics we have received the fullness of revelation. We have heard the Good News proclaimed in Word and Sacrament. We have the
promised guidance of the Holy Spirit to guide and direct the Church. We needn’t be concerned that good things can happen “outside” the
Church—rather we can rejoice in the goodness of God. As people who have the benefit of the fullness of
revelation Catholics have the honor and privilege of telling the story of Jesus in its fullness.
pertenecemos a Cristo.
