THE PLAZA mixed-use development | 3rd year studio

The community known as “Tulsa North” in Tulsa, Oklahoma is an underserved, desolate area in need of rejuvenation. With minimal resources available in transportation, health care, and available jobs; the people of Tulsa North are unable to function properly. We were given a site that had an existing run-down strip center with a clinic already in the construction phase at the East side of the site. My partner, Becca Barenblat, and I made a design decision to leave the clinic as is in order to develop a mixed-use facility to provide a source of income in the community and give families a chance at a better quality of life.

Medieval Revival was a design challenge given during my semester abroad in Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. The site is a real and commonly used area by the local Italians, who also came to our studio review for ideas of how to develop the area. I took what was already provided, the historical fortress stone wall and designed a performance art center that could be used as a theater, art gallery, and a bar at night with a outdoor piazza for social gatherings. I wanted to explore how to preserve the history and culture of this intimate Italian town with local materials and provide a modern day cultural center to introduce change.

Play by Play is a design based off a well-known play, “Who’s on first?” by Abbott and Costello. I was directed to take the play and turn it into architecture. The site itself was fictional but was restricted on the West and North sides with high-traffic roadways, to the East was an existing building, and to the South was a body of water. The comedy act “Who’s on first” is unique in the fact that the doalogue is constantly revolving while never coming to a point. As my process unfolds, you will see the dialogue and program wrapping around each other finally composing the structure for the skin of the roof.

Campus choice is a mixed-use building, designed to sit on the edge of Texas A&M’s campus in a highly congested area of town. The site itself has very specific parameters with an entrance to an existing campus parking garage incorporated into the design and surrounded by three busy streets. I wanted to maximize as much of the site as possible, so the triangular form rising up twelve stories in the air gave the most amount of space without over stepping my boundaries. The first two floors are retail and commercial space with the towers becoming one bedroom and two bedroom student apartments.

Fitness.lab is a recreational center designed to fill an entire block in downtown Bryan, Texas. The site itself serves as the South entrance into the highly active and cultural historic downtown. My partner, Seth Donnell, and I wanted to respond the level of the social activity and design a center that would draw in the locals. Our main design concept was to pull the running track outside of the main structure and have it supported entirely on it’s own. By doing this, we were able to learn how to design a round structure to stand as well as create a level of interest of the public. We also renovated the existing park across the street to liven the area and encourage outdoor activity.

furniture design | 1st year studioINDUSTRIAL DESIGN

Industrial design, by definition, is the fusion of applied art and applied science. In studio, it was to become a fusion of usable furniture and a sculptural form. The “study rest” is a hands-free alternative, designed to give your back a rest while conveniently hosting your textbook or other reading material. Ergonomic studies prove lying on your stomach, a common studying position, can cause significant pressure to the cervical vertebrae and can have lasting, painful effects. This is a healthier alternative, allowing your upper body to rest at a 45° angle comfortable with your eye-level at the height ergonomically to properly read.
