Section1:FormattingFigureswithintheThesisorDissertationGeneralFormattingGuidelines:

• Besurethatallinsertedfiguresarelabeledwithatitleandnumbero Example:Figure1.Reactionshot.

• Thenumberingforeachfiguremustbeconsecutive,pertherequirementsof

yourchosenstyleguide.o Numberingcanbefromthebeginningofthedocumentorfromthestart

ofeachchapter.Forexample,Figure1:ReactionshotorFigure1.1Reactionshot.

• Yourcasingchoicesmustmatchbetweenallofthefigurelabelsandshouldfollowtherequirementsofyourchosenstyleguide.

o Forexample,ifyoutitlesareinALLCAPSinyourtext,theywillneedtobeinALLCAPSinyourlistoffiguresandthroughoutyourotherfiguretitles.TheruleappliestotitlesthatareTitleCased,lowercased,orJustcapitalizethefirstwordofthetitle.

• Ifafigureislandscapeoriented,thefigure’slabelandpagenumbermustbelandscapeorientedtomatch.Thepagenumbershouldappearbottomcenteronthepage.

• Figuresmustbeclearlydelineatedfromthetext.Thiscanbedonebylinebreaks(minimum2linebreaksor2double-spacedlines),borders,oradelineationthatisapprovedbyyourstyleguide.Thetitleanddescriptionoffiguresareconsideredpartofthefigureandmustbeclearlydelineatedfromthetextaswell.

• Figuresembeddedintoyourdocumentmustfitonasinglepage.Youcanuse

smallerfontsizeonfigurecaptions,butitcannotbebelow8point.Iftheembeddeditemdoesnotfitwithinyourtextonasinglepage,itmustbemovedtoanappendix.Youcaneithergiveeachfigureitsownappendixoryoucancreateasingleappendixcontainingmultiplefigures.

• Unliketherestofyourdocument,thedescriptionsandtitlesoffiguresembeddedinyourdocumentcanbesingle-spaced.

• Youmustusethesamefontstyleastherestofyourdocument.Asnotedabove,

thefontsizecanbesmallerthantherestofthefontsizeinthedocument. InsertingacaptionforafigureinMicrosoftWord:

UsingthisfunctioninMicrosoftWordenablesyoutoensurethatthereisconsistencyamongfiguretitlesthroughoutyourdocument.ThesecaptionswillalsothenenableyoutoautomaticallycreateaListofFigures.Remember:Allfiguresneedtobeformattedidenticallywitheachother.1.Findyourfirstfigureinyourdocument.2.Positionyourmousecursoratthebeginningofthefigure’stitle/description.GototheReferencestab.3.Onthistab,selectInsertCaption.ThisislocatedinthecenteroftheReferencestabundertheCaptionssection.4.Amenuwillpopupandlooksimilartotheimagebelow.5.Makesuretheword“Figure”isdisplayedintheLabelsection.Ifitdoesnot,clickonthedownarrowintheLabelsectionandselectitfromthelist.6.Whenthecaptionsays“Figure1,”clickOK.

7.Thelabel“Figure1”shouldappearinfrontofyourcaption.YouwillnoticethatWordhaschangedthelabelanddescriptionofyourfiguretoitsdefaultsettings.8.YoucanchangethecaptionformattingstylebygoingtotheHometab.ThereyouwillseetheStylessectionintheribbon.Inthelowerright-handcorneroftheStylessection,youwillseeanarrow.ClickonthearrowtobringuptheStylesmenu.9.Clickanywhereonthecaption(labelordescription)andthiswilldisplaytheCaptionsoptionintheStylesmenu.10.Clickonthedownarrowlocatedtotherightof“Caption.”

11.ChooseModify.

12.Thisiswhereyoucanmodifythefontstyle,fontsize,thepositionofthelabelanddescription(e.g.,centered,left-aligned),andthelinespacing(e.g.,single-spaced).13.Onceyouhavefixedthestyleofthecaption,clickOK.Thecaptionforyourfigureshouldreflectthesechanges.Fromhere,allcaptionsforyourfiguresshouldlookthesame.14.Toinsertacaptionfortherestofthefiguresinyourdocument,followtheabovesteps.15.Theonlychangeisthatinsteadofmakingsurethelabelis“Figure1”(Step7above),thenumbermustbechangedtoaccuratelyreflecttheorderoftherespectivetable.

Thissectionprovidesthereaderwithasenseofwhyindividualsactdifferentlywhileina

crowdthantheydoinprivate.Thefirstruleofbeinginthecrowdisthateverycrowd

musthavealeader.Seefigure2foravisualrepresentation.

Whenfollowingtheleaderthereareseveralthingsthathappentoindividuals.Theymay

notusethesamecriticalthinkingskillsiftheyaresimplyfollowingtheleader.

Section2:FormatRequirementsfortheListofFigures

• TheListofFiguresisplacedimmediatelyaftertheListofTables(orifyoudonothaveaListofTablesdirectlyafteryourTableofContents.).

• Itmustbelabeledas“ListofFigures”

• TheListofFiguresismandatoryonlyifthereare5ormorefiguresfoundinthe

document.However,youcanchoosetohaveaListofFiguresifthereare4orlessfiguresinthedocument.

• RegardlessofwhetheryouarerequiredtohaveaListofFiguresorifyouchose

tohaveaListofFigures,allfiguresincludedinyourtextandappendicesmustappearinyourListofFigures.

• Furthermore,ifyouchosetohaveaListofFigures,youareboundbyalllist

formattingrulesandyoumustincludeallfiguresonthelist(foundinboththedocumentandtheappendices).

• ThepagenumberslistedintheListofFiguresmustmatchthepagenumbers

listedforeachfigureastheyappearinthetext.

• ThelabelandnumberforeachfigurelistedintheListofFiguresmustmatchexactlyastheyappearinthetext.

• Thelabelisconsideredtobethefirstsentenceafteryourlistedfigurenumber.

ThissentencemustmatchverbatimbetweentheListofFiguresandthetext.o Forexample:ifyourListofFigurescontainsFigure2:GrumpyCat;the

correspondingtablelabelinthetextshouldbeFigure2:GrumpyCat.ItshouldnotbeFigure1:GrumpyorFigure1:CatorFigure1:GrumpyCatChillingonFridayAfternoon.

• YourcasingchoicemustalsomatchbetweenyourfigurelabelinthetextandintheListofFigures.

o Forexample:ifyourListofFigurescontainsFigure4b:TwoCoolCamels;thecorrespondingtablelabelinthetextshouldbeFigure4b:TwoCoolCamels.ItshouldnotbeFigure4b:TwocoolCamelsorFigure4b:Twocoolcamels,etc.

• TheformatusedforyourListofFiguresmustmatchtheformattingstyleofyourTableofContents,ListofTables,andanyotherlistsincludedinyourfrontmaterial.

Section3:HowtoManuallyCreateaListofFiguresThismethodisalmostidenticaltohowyouwouldmanuallycreateaTableofContentsorListofTables(seeTableofContentsManualandManualforFormattingtheTablesandtheListofTablesintheThesisorDissertation)inMicrosoftWord.

1. MakesureyouhavetheHeading“ListofFigures”onthepage.Besurethatitfollowstheformatforallothermajorheadingsthroughoutthedocument(SeeHeadingsandSubheadingsManualforhelpwithformattingmajorheadingsusingtheStyleguidesinMicrosoftWord.)

2. Typethefirstentry.Remember:• FigureNumberandLabel• Makesurethefontstyle,fontsize,andcasingmatchbetweentheListof

Figuresandthetext.3. PressTabandthentypeitsrespectivepagenumber(Remember:makesurethe

pagenumbermatchesexactlybetweenthedocumentandwhatislistedontheListofFigures)

4. ThenselecttheTabstopcharacter.InordertoshowtheTabstopcharacter,clicktheHometab.ThenclickShow/Hideintheparagraphgroup.

5. Clickthearrowfoundatthebottomlefthandcorneroftheparagraphgroup.6. ThislaunchestheParagraphDialogBox.ClicktheTabsbutton.

7. Type6.4”undertheTabstopposition.Thismeansthenumberwillendatthe1”margin(REMEMBER:allmarginsincludingtherightmarginforthethesisorthedissertationmustbe1”).

8. UnderAlignment,clickRight.9. UnderLeader,selectoption2forellipses(...).TheGraduateCollegedoesnot

allowleaders.

10. ClickSetandthenOK.11. PressEnter.Typeyournextentry,pressTab,andthentypetheentry’s

respectivepagenumber.RepeatuntilyourListofFiguresisfinished.

Section4:HowtoCreateaListofFiguresAutomaticallyinMicrosoftWord

AddingcaptionsviatheCaptionssection(underReferencestab),enablesyoutoautomaticallycreateaListofFiguresinMicrosoftWord.Makesurethatyourcaptionshavebeenproperlyinsertedandmodified.Iftheyarenot,thenitwillcauseissueswhenyoutryandcreateyourListofFigures.1.GotoyourblankListofFigurespage.2.HitentersothathaveablanklineunderneaththeListofFiguresheading.3.ClicktheReferencestab.SelecttheInsertTableofFigures,foundintheCaptionssection.4.TheTableofFiguresmenuwillappear.Yoursshouldlooksimilartotheonebelow.5.MakesurethattheCaptionlabelsays“Figure.”Ifitdoesnot,clickthedownarrowandchoose“Figure.”6.Inordertomodifythefontsize,fontstyle,andmakesuretheListisdouble-spaced,clickonthemodifybutton.ThiswillbringupanothertheStylemenu.ClickmodifyagainandthiswillbringuptheModifyStylemenu.7.Onceyouhavemadethenecessarychanges,clickOK(allthreemenus).8.TheListofFigureswillbegenerated. Remember:SimilartotheTableofContentsandListofTables,youcannotfixanymisspellingsorspacingproblemsontheListofFiguresitself.Instead,youwillneedtogotothecaptionitselfandmakethecorrections.YouwillthenneedtoupdatetheListofFigurestoreflectthechanges.UpdatingtheListofFigures:TherearetwooptionstoupdatetheListofFigures.

• FirstOption:ThefirstisthatundertheModifyStylemenu(Step6above),youcanclick“Automaticallyupdate.”Thiswillensurethatanychangesmadetothefigures(captionspellingortheirplacement)willbeautomaticallyupdatedontheListofFigures.

• SecondOption:1. NavigateyourmousetotheTableofContentsitself.Right-clickwithintheTable

ofContents.Itwillturngreyandtwomenuswillappear.2. Select“UpperField.”Anothermenuwillappear.3. Choose“Updateentiretable”andclickOK.ThiswillupdateyourListofTablesto

reflectanychangesyoumayhavemadetothetables’captionsorplacementinthedocument.
