LANGUAGE AND THE BRAIN

Where language is stored…

…supported by multiple MRI studies at universities like UCLA,

Stanford, etc.

Babies’ brains have the wiring needed to acquire ANY language in the world.

This is a developmental “window of opportunity” that will close.

• A relationship between world

language study and increased

mathematical skill development,

particularly in the area of

problem solving, points to the

fact that second

language learning

is more of a

cognitive than

linguistic activity.

LANGUAGE ADVANTAGE

•“This is a Sputnik moment. For too long, Americans have relied on other countries to speak our language. But we won't be able to do that in the increasingly complex and interconnected world.” •“To prosper economically and to improve relations with other countries, Americans need to read, speak and understand other languages.”

Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan Foreign Language Summit DEC 8, 2010
