Dear Parents and Friends,
Not long to go and our Ensemble members, plus Angelica, Joseph and myself will be performing in the State School’s Spectacular. We have two days of rehearsals coming up which are very long days but also exciting as we finally get to see all the other performers ‘do their thing’. I hope lots of you have bought tickets to come along and enjoy the show. The state school spectacular shows really are wonderful and very entertaining.
Winter bugs and illnesses. There are very few of our students, staff and parents who have managed to escape the many bugs, colds and flu versions that are around this winter. Whilst we don’t want our students missing school we also don’t want ill children at school. If your child is unwell please keep them home where they can rest, keep warm and get well. If you child is going to be
away please call us or send us a message via http://goo.gl/i0dKiJ .
Hats on! Our Sunsmart policy reminds us that from Sept 1st our students must wear their wide brimmed school hats. Our students have this week to find their hats, make sure they are in good repair or purchase a replacement. From Monday any student without a school wide brimmed hat will be asked to play in the undercover area. Help your child to find their hat and make sure it is clean and tidy. Our School Uniform Policy states that all students’ hats must be a school wide brimmed hat, not a plain red hat purchased elsewhere. Please support our uniform policy and purchase a new hat if your child doesn’t have a school hat.
Last week’s curriculum day. Last Friday, when our students were recovering from our busy Science/Book Week, our teaching staff were working on documenting our beliefs about teaching reading, why we teach reading the way we do and what we expect each lesson to include. Pulling all this information together in to the one document means we will have something that not only supports our current teachers when they are teaching reading but any teachers new to the school can be given the documentation so strategies, terminology and lesson structure will continue in a consistent way. In Monday’s Age there was an article about the importance of teaching comprehension strategies to students. At Malmsbury PS we teach the five comprehension strategies mentioned in the article to all our students. It is great to have that consistency of language and strategies across our school and to see our students using the strategies to become better readers. No newsletter next week as I will be at the Spectacular rehearsals.
Warm regards, Carolyn Tavener.

Community Garden update. We need your help to bring some pine logs down from the school plantation land. These logs will be used to build hugel kultur garden beds. Arianne has made one already down below the basketball court if you are interested in having a look. Can you meet Arianne and Dean on Saturday Septem-ber 12 at 10.00am in Urquhart street, Malmsbury to help bring some logs over to our school? Wear your work clothes/boots/gloves and bring your ute and/or trailer and shovels and chainsaws.
Malmsbury PS OSHC. Lori Schooling is running our OSHC service for the rest of this term. Lori is thoroughly enjoying getting to know our OSHC students and planning fun activities with them. Grounds Maintenance Roster. You can come up to school to do a job from the roster any time that suits you. The aim of the roster is to re-duce the need for working bees or to pay someone to come and do our yard maintenance. Working togeth-er we can keep our yard safe and looking neat. ► If you are working up a ladder e.g. clearing
leaves from gutters, you must have another person there with you to hold the ladder.
► If you can’t do your week, you must arrange a swap with another family and let the school know who you have swapped with and what date you now have on the roster.
► When you have completed one of the jobs, please let the office know so we can cross it off
our list.
Thank you for helping our school to look cared for.

a plot in common.
Little Plotters Workshop.
As a part of our project A Common Place, we would like to invite
some Little Plotters to share our farm.
The school holiday adventure is about experiencing what life is like on
a farm and the different ways we grow our food.
We will start the day with morning tea in our 1800's barn. We provide
our Little Plotters with some delicious farm snacks and cloud juice.
As Little Plotters you will need to get your hands dirty in the garden
plots! We will do some digging and planting and prepare a little plant
for you to take home and grow.
We will visit the farm animals and give them their morning tea and
cuddles. The chickens love their treats from the veggie garden, the
pigs love ANYTHING to eat and a belly scratch, and Pattie (our cow)
and her little calf love a big pile of hay.
We will talk about the different food we grow and share some stories
and activities along the way.
Our Little Plotters workshops will be held on Sept 21, 22 and 23 2015.
